Breathing plays a far more significant role in my Rider Biomechanics system than simply supplying oxygen to working muscles. In my teaching, breath is intimately connected to stability, posture, force transmission, and the rider's ability to remain organized under the powerful forces generated by the horse's movement. Riders who hold their breath often become rigid, disconnected, or unstable, while riders who learn to breathe effectively can create the balance between strength and suppleness that allows true harmony with the horse.
One of the primary functions of breath is its relationship to core stabilization, a strategy that underpins effective riding. Stabilization begins with the bear-down which is not a matter of tightening the abdominal muscles or sucking in the stomach. It instead involves creating intra-abdominal pressure by engaging the deep core musculature while continuing to breathe. The rider learns to feel as though the torso becomes a pressurized cylinder, capable of supporting the spine and transmitting force efficiently from the horse through the rider's body. Breath is essential to maintaining this internal support system. When riders stop breathing, they often lose the dynamic stability that 'bear down' is intended to create. Deep, unrestricted breathing helps the rib cage remain organized over the pelvis while allowing the torso to stay both stable and elastic. Riders who brace their chest or hold tension in their diaphragm frequently become stiff through the spine and hips, preventing the horse's movement from being absorbed and transmitted effectively. In contrast, a rider who breathes into a well-supported torso can remain structurally strong while still allowing the necessary mobility through the joints.
Another important aspect of breathing is its effect on tension. Many riders unconsciously hold their breath during challenging movements, transitions, jumping efforts, or moments of insecurity. This often creates a cascade of compensations: gripping thighs, locked hips, rigid hands, elevated shoulders, and loss of balance. Effective riding requires the rider to remain mentally and physically organized while under load. Continuous, functional breathing helps riders stay present, maintain body awareness, and avoid these counterproductive tension patterns.
Breath also has a direct influence on the horse. Horses are extraordinarily sensitive to changes in muscle tone, posture, and emotional state. A rider who breathes deeply and consistently tends to project calmness and stability through the seat and body. Conversely, breath-holding often communicates tension and uncertainty. As riders become more skilled, they can use subtle changes in breathing patterns to support transitions, influence relaxation, and improve communication with the horse.
Ultimately, within my biomechanics model, breathing is not a separate skill but an integral part of effective rider organization. It supports the bear down, reinforces structural stability, reduces unnecessary tension, and helps the rider remain connected to both their own body and the horse beneath them. When breath, alignment, and stability work together, the rider develops the ability to sit quietly, influence clearly, and create the conditions that allow the horse to achieve greater balance, self-carriage, and freedom of movement.

Self-Carriage Begins With the Rider.

In dressage the term “self-carriage” is used to describe the horse’s ability to carry itself in balance, lightness, and uphill posture without constant support from the rider’s hand or leg. Yet true self-carriage in the horse cannot exist unless the rider first develops self-carriage within their own body.

Rather than relying on force, repetition, and/or stronger aids, riders with solid organization, an understanding of physics along with deep knowledge of biomechanics, organize their bodies so the horse receives clear, stable, and usable information. In this framework, the rider’s body is not merely sitting on the horse—it is shaping the horse, and his balance, in every moment.

The horse can only mirror the quality of organization it feels from above.

A rider who collapses in their torso, braces in their joints, tips forward, leans back, grips with the leg, loses balance during movement, is too soggy, or pulls on the reins cannot ask the horse for self-carriage because they themself are not in self-carriage.

The horse is forced to compensate continually for instability, imbalance, or inconsistency coming from the saddle.

Horses instinctively organize around the rider’s center of gravity. If the rider’s body is unstable or inefficient, the horse’s body becomes defensive, heavy, crooked, or disconnected.

Effective riding begins with the rider becoming structurally organized from the inside outward. This means developing a body that can absorb and transmit force, stabilize against motion, and remain aligned without rigidity. The rider must learn to become a quiet, balanced, predictable load the horse can easily carry. This stability changes everything for the horse. The horse begins to trust the rider’s balance and no longer needs to brace defensively through its own body.
From this place, the horse starts to discover its own balance.

Riding is simply an exchange of forces. Every movement of the horse creates forces that travel upward into the rider, and every organizational choice made by the rider influences how those forces return back to the horse.

Riders who lack self-carriage often leak force through unstable joints, hollow posture, collapsed ribs, or gripping limbs. This creates noise in the communication system. The rider seeking self-carriage must instead learn to channel force efficiently through an aligned skeletal structure. Alignment is not simply an aesthetic ideal; it is a functional arrangement that allows gravity and movement to travel through the rider efficiently. When the rider’s joints stack appropriately and the body is organized around a stable core, the rider ceases to interfere with the horse’s movement. The aids become quieter, clearer, and far more influential.

A horse ridden by a rider in true self-carriage often begins to seek self-carriage almost automatically. This occurs because the rider is no longer holding the horse together. The rider is not balancing the horse with the reins, driving continuously with the leg, or gripping to stay secure. Instead, the rider provides organized stability and clear directional influence while allowing the horse to carry itself.

True rider self-carriage comes from skeletal support and postural tone rather than muscular gripping. When riders learn to stabilize from their center rather than their extremities, the limbs can soften. The seat becomes effective. The joints become shock absorbers rather than braces. The rider begins moving with the horse instead of against it.

This is where harmony emerges.

The horse starts lifting through the thoracic sling, swinging through the back, and carrying more weight behind because the rider’s organization allows for it. The rider is no longer pushing the horse into an outline or frame. Instead, the horse finds balance because the rider has stopped disturbing it.

Effectiveness should feel almost disproportionate to effort.

When biomechanics are correct, riders no longer need bigger aids. Tiny adjustments in organization create enormous changes in the horse because the rider is influencing the horse at the level of balance, force transmission, and nervous system response.

Self-carriage therefore becomes less about “putting the horse together” and more about removing the rider’s interference.

The rider develops:
* Stability without rigidity
* Tone without tension
* Alignment without stiffness
* Influence without force

And in response, the horse develops:

* Balance without restraint
* Engagement without driving
* Lightness without manipulation
* Collection without compression

Ultimately, self-carriage is not a technique applied to the horse. It is a conversation of organization between two bodies.

The rider’s biomechanics shape the horse’s biomechanics.

The rider’s nervous system shapes the horse’s nervous system.

The rider’s balance shapes the horse’s balance.

When the rider learns true self-carriage, the horse is finally free to discover its own.

The concept of “bear down” is another foundational building block for creating true stability, influence, and communication in the saddle.

Unlike gripping, bracing, or stiffening, "bear-down" refers to a deep, organized activation of the rider’s core—similar to the feeling of preparing to cough, laugh forcefully, lift something heavy, or engage the torso for impact. It is an internal pressure system that stabilizes the rider from the inside out, allowing the body to become quietly powerful instead of tense or rigid.

Without bear down, a rider’s torso tends to collapse, wobble, or disconnect from the horse’s movement. Riders may compensate by gripping with the legs, pulling on the reins, hollowing the back, and generally becoming unstable in transitions and lateral work. However, when a rider truly bears-down correctly the torso feels more like a box-compact, wider, "well structured and stuffed," and their underneath more connected. This ultimately leads to the sensation of “plugging in” to the horse, as though the rider's center becomes dense and anchored while the limbs remain free and supple. The lower abdomen and pelvic floor feel engaged without strain, the spine feels supported, and the rider develops the sense of being carried rather than bounced.

Importantly, bear down is not meant to create hardness or stiffness. In its most correct expression, it produces a feeling of elastic stability. The rider becomes simultaneously grounded and "breathable," with enough tone in the body to absorb motion without collapsing against it. The horse responds quite positively to this organization as it gives the horse a stable load to carry. A rider who bears down effectively offers the horse clarity, consistency, and balance, making the horse more confident to move freely beneath them. Conversely, a rider who lacks core organization often creates unpredictable movement patterns for which the horse must compensate or brace against.

The bear-down concept is imperative because it forms the biomechanical foundation for nearly every other aid the rider gives. Leg aids become clearer, rein aids become lighter, and the rider’s balance becomes independent of the horse’s motion. Bear-down helps prevent the common cycle of instability that causes riders to grip, tip forward, lean back, brace in the stirrups, or pull backward with the reins. It also protects the rider’s body by improving load transfer through the skeleton and reducing excessive muscular tension in smaller muscle groups.

A rider who is structurally organized and deeply connected through their underneath are much more able to influence the horse with precision, softness, and harmony.

In essence, bear down transforms the rider from a passive passenger into an organized, influential athlete.

Shoulder–hip–heel alignment is one of the foundational elements of effective riding. This vertical alignment creates a balanced, stable rider position that allows the horse to move freely underneath the rider sans unnecessary interference.
When the rider’s shoulder, hip, and heel stack in a straight line, the body functions as a centered, organized structure rather than a collection of disconnected parts. The rider can match forces efficiently, stay secure in the saddle, and communicate with far greater precision.
This alignment is not simply about “looking correct," It directly affects how forces travel through the rider’s body into the horse. A rider who tips forward, braces backward, or collapses through one side creates compensations in the horse. Even subtle asymmetries shift the horse’s balance, restrict the back, or encourage crookedness. In contrast, proper shoulder–hip–heel alignment allows the rider’s weight to distribute evenly through the seat bones and thighs, creating a sense of self-carriage in the rider, helping the horse remain straight, filled out, and symmetrical in its own body, ultimately leading to self-carriage in the horse.
This alignment also plays a critical role in stability. When the rider is vertically organized, the skeleton can bear load more efficiently and leg muscles no longer need to grip excessively for security. Developing a powerful “bear down” and core stability so the torso becomes a strong, supportive column/cube rather than a loose or collapsing structure, makes the rider easy to carry. A stable rider creates a stable platform for the horse, which in turn allows the horse to relax, engage the hindquarters, and move with greater freedom and confidence.
Ultimately, effective, harmonious riding depends on the rider becoming biomechanically neutral and supportive instead of disruptive. Shoulder–hip–heel alignment is the framework that makes this possible. It enables clearer aids, quieter movement, improved balance, and a more connected experience for both horse and rider.
Correct alignment is not merely a position to achieve—it is the starting point for true communication, connection and partnership with the horse.

You’ve Vet checked, assessed saddle fit, and talked with your trainer about your training plan. (And possibly have been told "something is wrong with your horse and it's time to find something more suitable, sound or athletic.")

But what if the real issue isn’t the horse at all?

What if it’s you?

Every rider brings their own asymmetries into the saddle. A collapsed hip, uneven seat bones, or a subtle pelvic tilt may seem insignificant on the ground, but on horseback those imbalances are amplified—and your horse feels every bit of it.... (actually- 4-5x as much)

The Horse is a Mirror

No rider is perfectly symmetrical.
When you lean or load one side more heavily, a chain reaction begins:
* You tilt, twist or collapse through one side
* The saddle transfers uneven pressure onto the horse’s back
* The horse compensates/braces to stay balanced & to keep you both upright

For a horse carrying a rider, and expected to perform their job, that compensation matters. Instead of developing even and balanced strength, the horse learns to protect itself by tightening, counter balancing, and bracing.

When"good" Training Stops Working

Exercises don’t always create symmetrical results. Rider imbalance will significantly stifle progress.
A muscle properly strengthens when it has full range of motion. Constant uneven pressure will keep muscles in a low-grade state of tension. Braced muscles can’t experience full range of motion, so they stop developing proper strength, suppleness (elasticity,) and volume. This state of tension then alters the skeletal system and cascades through the nervous, circulatory and visceral systems.
You may be doing "the right" exercises—but unintentionally preventing the musculoskeletal system from functioning properly.

The “Stiff Side” Isn’t Always the Horse

If your horse bends easily one direction but feels rigid the other way, your position is likely a key contributor to the problem.
For example, collapsing through your right hip adds weight to the horse’s right side, making it difficult for him to lift his ribcage and bend correctly.
----He’s not resisting—he’s compensating.

Small Imbalances Create Big Compensations

Uneven loading doesn’t just affect the back. It can lead to:
* Stiff/stuck shoulders
* Uneven strides
* Falling/leaning in or out
* Difficulty with one canter lead
* Resistance in the contact
* Refusal to bend, turn or jump
* Unidentifiable/phantom lameness
* Behavioral issues
* And so much more....
Your horse's center of balance is constantly adapting to yours. If you want a strong, symmetrical, healthy topline, and productive training sessions- your own balance and stability matter so much more than the "horse training plan." After all- horses know how to horse...... it's riders who need to learn to ride.
