🐴✨ Post-Foaling Uterine Lavage: Supporting the Mare’s Recovery ✨🐴

After foaling, some mares may benefit from a uterine lavage to help clear retained fluid, debris, or inflammation from the uterus. This procedure can support healing, reduce the risk of infection, and help protect future fertility.

🔹 Common reasons for post-foaling lavage may include:
• Retained placenta
• Excessive uterine fluid
• Metritis/endometritis concerns
• Delayed uterine clearance

🔹 What to expect:
A veterinarian gently flushes the uterus with sterile fluid to help remove contaminants and encourage normal recovery. The procedure is typically well tolerated and tailored to each mare’s needs.

💡 Early monitoring after foaling is key! Watch for:
✔ Fever
✔ Foul-smelling discharge
✔ Depression or decreased appetite
✔ Colic signs
✔ Failure to pass placenta completely

Healthy mares recover faster and have the best chance for a successful future breeding season. Always work closely with your veterinarian for postpartum care recommendations. 🩺🐎
