We went to our local pet show and educated the crowd on some baby emus and our sulcata tortoise last night.
This is our first year our adult emus layed eggs. We have had quite a few hatch already but these are our youngest.
These Emus hatched May 31st, names are Mouse and Woodsy. They can get up to 6ft tall and weigh about 75lbs. Emus can run up to 31 mph as an adult. They are omnivores. The females make a drumming noise (sounds like jumanji) to attract the male. Females will lay her clutch and the males are supposed to lay on them. We had to take our eggs and put them in an incubator because they decided to lay eggs on the coldest days this year.
Sherman the sulcata tortoise has grown 3x bigger since last year's petting zoo. When i got him he was maybe a little bigger than a half dollar. He loves to eat lettuce and grass. He does enjoy his soaks in the tub once a week.
Sulcata or African spurred tortises can weigh up to 100lbs as an adult and about 30 inches in shell length. Lifespan is 70 to 100+ years old. They are from the Sahara desert. They are herbivores. They use the spurs on their legs to help dig and burrow. They are great at climbing and escaping as well. Sulcatas have distinct scutes on their shells
