If you cannot touch or handle the cat,if it is truly feral the shelter cannot safely house it, care for it, socialize it, or adopt it out. Feral cats are not “stray pets”; they are unsocialized and fearful of human contact. In a shelter environment, they experience extreme stress, which often leads to poor outcomes, including injuries to themselves and staff, or humane euthanasia.

There *is* a humane, proven solution that works: Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR).

TNR allows feral/community cats to be humanely trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and then returned to their outdoor home. This approach:
• Stabilizes and gradually reduces colony populations
• Prevents constant breeding and nuisance behaviors (like fighting, spraying, yowling)
• Improves the cats’ overall health and quality of life
• Creates a balance that benefits both the cats and the community

TNR is the only method shown to work long-term—for both people who care for and feed community cats, and for those who prefer not to have them on their property.

Relocation alone doesn’t work. Euthanasia alone doesn’t work. Shelters can’t fix feral behavior. But TNR does. Facts.

So before you bring a feral cat to a shelter, please consider the reality and choose the solution that is humane, effective, and truly helps everyone involved. That is TNR !!

TNR isn’t just compassionate, it’s the best working solution we and the cats have. 🐈

‼️🙌🙏 The Kershaw County Humane Society is still FULL after yet another week of HIGH intake and fully expecting it again with the week to come. They are operating at a capacity level that is absolutely heartbreaking, and overwhelming to say the least, to the staff and animals.
There is not a single kennel or space open for another. Each is filled with multiples. All the yards are full, even the offices and closets are full with babies, yet the animals KEEP arriving and the staff keep on showing up and fighting.
Right now the risk some of these animals face due to space, resources and time alone is terrifying. Yet we are being transparent. That is the harsh reality of this overpopulation crisis.
For the staff and volunteers at KCHS TO CONTINUE SAVING these innocent LIVES, like those pictured who are currently at the shelter, many of them and the other innocent lives there MUST SAFELY GET OUT OF THE SHELTER.NOW. Many have exceeded length of stays, many are extremely vulnerable and too young for full vetting, some require extra/further medical care. ALL DESERVE a chance and OUT of this environment. - ❌️❌️🆘️🆘️🙏🙏

Another day, another “stray” who was from this County, now arriving at the Kershaw County Humane Society in poor and an overall just sad condition . 💔 This time it is this very sweet, and polite
*doodley" boy, the staff named *Twiggy*.

He came in at the end of the day today in terrible condition. His fur is SO severely matted that it’s causing him pain and is beyond the shelters capabilities. It’s tight, with huge heavy clumps like solid bricks attached to his body. With no separation to his skin. He’s sore, uncomfortable, and will need sedation and veterinary care just to safely shave him down. This isn’t something that happened overnight. We will never understand. He is such a friendly little guy, even after he was evidently "ignored" somewhere.

That’s the part that should concern all of us.

Cases like this are no longer rare, they’re becoming *routine*. The number of animals coming through the doors in conditions like Twiggy’s has skyrocketed. This isn’t just an overpopulation issue that they are dealing with, it’s neglect. These situations don’t happen without someone seeing, knowing, and doing nothing. Simple.

Meanwhile, it’s the shelter staff and volunteers working nonstop, on the clock and off, doing everything they can to care for these animals and hold the system together assisting the community residents. But they shouldn’t have to carry this alone, or do it alone.

If every person did *something*, fewer animals would suffer like this. That’s the truth.
We definitely do not have to cause them harm.

We need change.
We need stronger laws.
We need enforcement and punishment.
We need accountability.
Because this is NOT okay. These animals and the people fighting every day to save them deserve better.

Kershaw County, we must do better.

🚨 **URGENT – PUPPIES NEED RESCUE or fosters NOW** 🚨

A litter of 6 *Mix & Match* puppies (only around 6–8 weeks old) were brought into Kershaw County Humane Society as strays via animal control.
Unfortunately the non stop pick up and intake between the two separate organizations who assist OUR COUNTY and Community is heartbreaking and unbelievable.

The shelter is beyond full and overwhelmed. They are at almost triple capacity. So many are at risk for many reasons.

Donations are low, and resources are nearly exhausted or nonexistent. All across the state Shelters, Rescues and even foster homes are full and overcapacity ..with adoptions also extremely low .. 💔💔

MANY innocent lives are **at risk** right now for many reasons, but basics like space, and resources are HUGE factors. What is sad, is all came FROM, OUR COUNTY and OUR neighborhoods.

The staff is doing everything they can, but they cannot do it alone.

❗ **HELP IS NEEDED IMMEDIATELY:**
• Rescues
• Fosters
• Adopters
*Volunteers
*Donations
*sharing posts on social media.

This is a **community issue** we have to do better. Where are these animals supposed to go when there is no space left?

🐾 Please step up if you can. NOW is the time, any little is a huge help..
🐾 **Share this post to spread awareness.**

**Spay and neuter—above all else—is critical to preventing this crisis.**

Two beautiful dogs. Two happy endings. ❤️

Freya and Shane arrived at Kershaw County Humane Society as strays and at different times. Sadly, neither was microchipped and neither was ever reclaimed. 💔

Both were cared for, loved, fully vetted, and received their spay/neuter surgeries while waiting for a second chance.🐾🫶

They were both dog-friendly, found shelter friends to share their time with, and proved to be amazing adoptable dogs. Yet Freya waited nearly 6 months, while Shane, a senior Lab mix, spent around 2–3 months waiting for his opportunity.

Like shelters everywhere, Kershaw County Humane Society is overcrowded and overwhelmed. That's why rescue partners, friends and all foster homes are SO important. They make it possible and working together, help create much-needed space and time. This supports the shelter staff, and of course most importantly, helps save lives and to continue saving more.

Today, we're celebrating Freya and Shane as they head to rescue and a step closer to that 😏🫶- along with the bright futures they deserve. 🐾❤️

We are also hoping to raise approximately $175 to help the shelter offset some of the costs involved in Freya's and Shanes rescue, veterinary care, and transport. Every dollar helps make these lifesaving efforts possible. And without YOU, outcomes like this wouldn't be possible.

Thank you to the shelter staff, volunteers, rescues, and fosters, who work tirelessly for animals in need. Thank you to those who continue to support&donate, Because of people like you, animals just like Freya and Shane get their second chance. ❤️

Long post alert. But it must be shared. Far and wide. Loud and clear 🐾🧡😞💔💙🙏

These animals deserve to be seen and their stories heard and so do some very passionate and quite amazing people who we should be very grateful for. The hard work they all do for the animals, in animal welfare overall and for the residents in our community and beyond is outstanding, and sadly often forgotten. They need OUR support. We must do better

Today, we want to take a moment to recognize some of the true heroes of Kershaw County, the shelter staff&volunteers at Kershaw County Humane Society

Every single day, these incredible individuals show up for the animals who have no one else. They fight for them, care for them, advocate for them, and love them through some of the hardest circumstances imaginable. They work tirelessly, often behind the scenes, sacrificing their time, energy, mental health, and hearts to save innocent lives. It is non stop and they can not and should not have to do it alone.

Right now, our county should not only be celebrating these dedicated shelter workers, but also taking a hard look at the very real animal welfare crisis unfolding in our own communities and neighborhoods. 👀

There are more stray animals than ever before, entering shelters and roaming our neighborhoods and County. Sadly, more families are surrendering pets for a variety of reasons. Yet, many of these situations could have been prevented through responsible pet ownership, spaying and neutering, education, and community support.

Meanwhile, shelter staff are CURRENTLY caring for approximately 400+ animals on-site. Nearly triple what their facility was designed to handle. New animals continue arriving daily, often multiple times a day. Despite having limited space, limited resources, low adoption numbers, and donations stretched thinner than ever, they continue to show up and do whatever it takes. This is not a shelter PROBLEM - this is a COMMUNITY problem.

And perhaps one hardest part of all they deal with?
They are witnessing MORE abuse, neglect, abandonment, and outright cruelty than ever before. -

The things these amazing humans in our "little" shelter, see and deal with behind the scenes are heartbreaking. Yet somehow they continue managing daily operations, all while carrying the emotional weight of seeing innocent animals suffer. Trying to love them all, and put their broken pieces back together, in hopes they will get the life they deserve. A family of their own..

So now this brings us to the main reason/s of this post.

The two young female dogs pictured below, Goldie and Aspen, are just two examples of why we should all be concerned.

Goldie, a young Golden Retriever, and Aspen, a young hound mix, arrived at Kershaw County Humane Society separately, less than 24 hours apart over the weekend. They were no where near the other, each lady was found from opposite ends of our County. Both were found as "strays" by individuals who thankfully intervened when they could. They got them to the staff at KCHS who did not waste any time and took them in, and got them the chance they deserve

These girls are estimated to be only 1-2 years old.
Both weigh less than 25lbs, both girls should be around 50lbs. At a minimum. These poor babies have suffered and been deprived of "basic care" for quite some time.

They arrived in such devastating condition that it is difficult to comprehend how they survived. 😞 we will never understand.

Their tiny bodies are so emaciated that every bone is visible. Conditions like this do not happen overnight. They do not happen accidentally. They do not happen because of one missed meal.

While we may never know exactly where these girls came from or what they endured, we do know one thing: somewhere along the way, people failed them.

And this is NOT OK. #

Sadly cases like Goldie and Aspen are no longer rare. Shelter staff, who are human with feelings are seeing more and more animals arriving in conditions that were once uncommon, but are now becoming alarmingly frequent.

That should concern every single one of us.
Because these animals are coming from our own neighborhoods, our own roads, our own communities.

They are coming from Kershaw County.

Thankfully, Goldie and Aspen are now safe.

They are under the care of Kershaw County Humane Society, where without an entire village of people that have stepped forward to ensure they never experience that level of neglect, suffering, or cruelty again.

They have already been evaluated by the amazing veterinary team at Impact Inc 🐾💙 and while they both have a long road ahead, they are finally receiving the care they deserve.

Even more heartwarming, the incredible team at DoRe Ranch and Rescue while already busy and in action for a community TNR day for Kershaw county residents, helping assist with low cost spay and neuter services for feral/community cats, got to meet the two girls in the shelters surgery/medical department. They did a wonderful thing, and honestly did not hesitate, stepping forward to foster both girls. Their willingness to provide a safe place, proper care, and endless love is making an enormous difference, not only for Goldie and Aspen, who are going to benefit so much from this, but also for the other animals at the facility, and shelter staff working tirelessly to save every life they can.

That is what this work is truly about. This is what team work is about. This is what animal rescue and saving lives is about. It is about the animals.

It takes a village. -

A village of shelter staff, veterinarians, rescue partners, fosters, volunteers, donors, adopters, transporters, advocates, and community members.

People from all walks of life who may differ in countless ways, but who come together with one common goal: saving lives and preventing needless suffering. And bettering our community and neighborhoods.

So today, please keep the staff of Kershaw County Humane Society in your thoughts. And a HUGE thank you to the other organizations who also support our community and the lives of the animals. Thank them. Support them. Share their animals. Foster. Adopt. Volunteer. Donate if you are able. All are 501C3 non profits. Tax deductible - All rely on donations and support to continue saving lives. 🙏🐾💙🧡

While many people may never see the work they do behind the scenes, hundreds, and thousands of animals are alive today because they chose to show up. And thousands more have been prevented lives of neglect&cruelty..

And for that, they deserve far more recognition than they will ever ask for.

💙🐾🧡 These three little Gentlemen--
have landed rescue!!! - yay!
Being so young and vulnerable, in an already overcrowded shelter ! It was needed. 🐾🧡🐾

Thank you to the staff at Kershaw County Humane Society and their amazing rescue partners, as well as the fosters and transporters! These freedom rides are because of YOU guys, working together, to save another life (or more) -

They do need just a little helping hand** to raise some of the transport fees! Approx $85.00 would be terrific and get these babies on to the next part of their new beginnings! 🫶😎🐾
