Dr. Swinehart had the sweetest time during her recent visit to the Hands Helping Horses-Florence Area Humane Society!

We’re proud to help care for the horses at FAHS and grateful for the opportunity to support their mission of giving these deserving animals a healthier, happier start.

And while Dr. Swinehart was there to care for the horses, this adorable little pup clearly had other plans… 🐶

This cutie is up for adoption and looking for a family to call their own! If you’ve been thinking about adding a four-legged friend to your family, head over to the Florence Area Humane Society to learn more about the animals waiting for their forever homes.

Sometimes the best part of the job comes with four paws and a wagging tail!

🐴 BUTE vs. BANAMINE: Which one should I give my horse?

Both phenylbutazone (bute) and flunixin meglumine (Banamine) are NSAIDs used to help control pain and inflammation in horses—but that doesn't mean they are interchangeable.

💊 Bute (phenylbutazone)
Often used for musculoskeletal pain and inflammation, such as arthritis, lameness, and other orthopedic conditions. It is commonly used when the goal is to reduce inflammation and make a horse more comfortable with musculoskeletal pain.

💉 Banamine (flunixin meglumine)
Often used for visceral pain, including pain associated with colic. It can also be used for certain inflammatory conditions and fever.

⚠️ One important rule: Never combine NSAIDs unless specifically instructed by your veterinarian.

Giving bute and Banamine together—or switching between them too quickly—can increase the risk of serious gastrointestinal and kidney complications.

And remember: more medication doesn't necessarily mean more pain relief. The right medication, dose, and duration depend on what's causing your horse's pain.

📞 If you're unsure whether your horse needs bute, Banamine, or something else, give us a call before reaching for the medicine cabinet. We're always happy to help you determine the safest next step.

When it comes to pain management, the right drug for the right problem matters.

As we (hopefully) start saying goodbye to the long, hot days of summer, our horses are heading into a season of changing temperatures, pastures, and routines. Fall can be a beautiful time of year—but those changes can bring a few things to keep an eye on.

Here are some seasonal reminders to help keep your horse healthy and comfortable:

🪰 Don’t put away the fly spray just yet. In South Carolina, flies and other insects can remain a nuisance well into fall. Keep up with your fly-control routine and watch for skin irritation or sweet itch.

🌱 Keep an eye on changing pastures. As forage changes with the seasons, monitor your horse’s weight, appetite, and overall condition. Gradual changes in diet are always preferable to sudden ones.

🩺 Pay attention to digestive health. Changes in pasture, feed, routine, and temperature can all affect the digestive system. Watch for changes in appetite, manure, attitude, or signs of abdominal discomfort.

🐴 Stay on top of hoof care. Fall weather can mean more wet and muddy conditions. Regular hoof cleaning and farrier care are especially important as the ground changes.

💉 Check those vaccines and wellness appointments. Fall is a great time to make sure your horse is up to date on recommended vaccinations and schedule any routine wellness care before winter arrives.

A little preparation now can go a long way toward keeping your horse happy, healthy, and ready to enjoy the season.
