World Food Safety Day — Pet Edition 🐾 🍔
Pet nutrition plays a huge role in your pet’s overall health, and food safety matters just as much for animals as it does for people. From how food is stored to what diets are being fed, small choices can make a big difference over time.
A few science-based facts every pet owner should know:
• Pet food and water bowls can become one of the dirtiest items in the house when not cleaned regularly. Bacteria like Salmonella, E. coli, and Staph can build up quickly — especially in bowls with leftover wet food, saliva, or slimy buildup
• Raw diets can expose both pets and humans to harmful bacteria and parasites, even when pets seem healthy
• Grain-free diets are not necessary for most pets, and some have been investigated for a possible link to Dilated Cardiomyopathy (DCM), a serious heart disease in dogs
• Homemade diets are commonly nutritionally unbalanced unless carefully formulated with veterinary guidance
• Improperly stored or moldy food can cause serious illness, including vomiting, tremors, seizures, neurologic issues, and liver damage
• Sudden diet changes are a very common cause of vomiting, diarrhea, and GI upset in pets
Nutrition recommendations should be based on your individual pet — not just packaging, trends, or what worked for someone else’s dog online. If you have questions about your pet’s diet, your veterinarian is the best person to help you safely navigate those choices and find what works best for your pet. 🐾
