Tragedy struck one of our most precious horses on September 3rd. She had fractured her pastern in the pasture. A freak accident playing and prancing like the diva she was. Surgery with pins and screws was an option but no guarantee. She would never run again and most likely endure chronic pain. Maybe even founder in the good leg. Gillian Kite-Evilsizor was by my side and her loving support helped me to make the tough decision. We brushed her body until she was sheik and shiney, detangled her beautiful long tail and mane so it flowed. I gave her molasses cookies to show her how much I loved her. She wiggled her muzzle on my pocket for more treats. As Gill was getting her grain, I said, βGive her an extra scoopβ. Gill turned a bucket of grain into a birthday cake. She decorated it with her favorite treats, molasses cookies, apple-honey cookies, and soft chew peppermint candies. My beautiful mare enjoyed her cake and when she was done, she flipped the bucket over. Something she always does. The vet arrived and my chest got heavy and my heart ached badly. The tears started up again. We started the walk to the hill. She would stop and look back at the barn and then continued to walk. I wanted to turn around but when I looked at her, she had no fear. She was calm. But yet strong and so alive. She trusted me and followed where I led her. I hugged her, I kissed her. I told her how much I loved her. I held her face next to mine. I held her longer than usual because I knew it would be the last time. As she went to sleep, I praised her, I told her it was okay, and she did a good job. Jason Boysel βLJβ Gill, and I stayed with her until she took her last breath and her heart stopped beating. She found her way to the greener pastures. As I walked back to the barn alone with a piece of her beautiful tail, already braided, I felt the immense loss of my dream horse. My First Memory βMistressβ was laid to rest on the hill on September 4th. She will be forever missed.
