🐾 Why Do We Quarantine New Intakes? 🐾

One of the questions we get asked is, “Why can’t the new dog meet the other dogs right away?”

The answer is simple: to protect every animal in our care. ❤️

When a new dog arrives at Bonnie’s Haven BLAST, we don’t always know what they may have been exposed to before coming to us. Even dogs that appear perfectly healthy can carry illnesses or parasites without showing symptoms.

That’s why every new intake spends time in quarantine while we:

🩺 Complete a veterinary examination
💉 Begin age-appropriate vaccinations
🪱 Deworm and check for parasites
🐜 Start flea and tick prevention
❤️ Monitor for signs of illness
🐕 Allow them time to decompress after what is often a stressful experience

Quarantine isn’t a punishment—it’s one of the most important ways we keep every animal safe and healthy.

It may mean a little extra waiting before introductions, but it helps prevent illnesses from spreading and gives each new arrival the best possible start.

At BLAST, every decision we make is with the health and safety of our animals in mind.

🐾 Meet the President & Founder – Charlene Keiffer 🐾

Hi everyone! I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself to those who may be new to Bonnie’s Haven – BLAST.

I’m Charlene Keiffer, the President and Founder of Bonnie’s Haven – BLAST (Bonnie’s Legacy Animal Saving Team).

This photo was taken on transport day as I said goodbye to one of my foster dogs before she headed to her rescue partner. Today, she’s living the life she always deserved. Moments like these remind me exactly why I started this rescue.

Many people see the posts, fundraisers, and happy endings, but there’s so much that happens behind the scenes. As President, I handle the day-to-day operations of the rescue. Some of my responsibilities include:

🐾 Caring for the majority of the dogs in our kennels and our new intakes.
🐾 Evaluating every request for help and making the difficult decisions on which animals we can responsibly accept.
🐾 Networking every animal with rescue partners to give them the best chance at finding loving homes.
🐾 Ensuring all veterinary care is completed and documented accurately.
🐾 Keeping our community pet pantry stocked and organized.
🐾 Distributing pet food and supplies to families in need to help keep pets with the people who love them.
🐾 Planning fundraisers, managing social media, completing paperwork, building partnerships, writing grants, and working every day to grow our rescue.

On top of all of that, I also work a full-time job.

Bonnie’s Haven was named in honor of our beloved family dog, Bonnie. Her story has already been shared, but her legacy lives on through every animal we help.

This rescue isn’t just something I started—it’s my dream. It has my whole heart. Every late night, every early morning, every tear, every success story, and every ounce of energy I have goes into helping animals that have nowhere else to turn.

I couldn’t do this alone. I’m incredibly thankful for our dedicated board members, volunteers, fosters, rescue partners, donors, and every person who follows, shares, donates, or cheers us on. You are part of every life we save.

🐾 Today is a BIG day for this little family! 🩺❤️

Today, Momma and her five puppies are headed to the veterinarian for their final health certificates and vetting before they begin the next chapter of their journey with one of our trusted rescue partners.

Over the past several weeks, we’ve done everything we can to prepare them. To be good stewards of every donation, we administer the vaccines we’re able to give ourselves, which helps keep costs down so more of your support goes directly toward saving animals.

Today’s visit covers the care that can only be completed by our veterinarian, including each dog’s health certificate, f***l exam, and final medical evaluation before they travel.

🎉 Foster Found 🎉 We just need to get intake vetting covered 🩷

💚 Can You Help Us Say “Yes”? 💚

This sweet little girl was abandoned near Kanawha State Forest and eventually found her way to the porch of a kind elderly woman who is doing everything she can to keep her safe and out of the road. Unfortunately, she isn’t able to care for her long-term, and this little one is currently living in a crate on the porch.

She’s approximately 1 year old, around 15 pounds, and incredibly sweet. She deserves so much more than a crate on a porch.

We want so badly to help her, but right now we need two things:

🐾 A committed foster home
Fosters must complete an application, and all supplies are provided—you simply provide the love and a safe place for her to decompress while we find her forever home.

🐾 Donations for her veterinary care
Tomorrow, our mama dog and her five puppies head to the vet for final vetting, and last week our newest intake, Rocky, had an extensive veterinary visit. As a brand-new rescue, every animal we save depends on the generosity of our community.

🍦🐾 Happy National Ice Cream Day! 🐾🍦

Treat your furry best friend to a cool snack they can enjoy too!

🦴 Easy Dog-Friendly “Ice Cream”

Ingredients:
🐶 2 ripe bananas
🥜 ½ cup plain xylitol-free peanut butter
🥣 1 cup plain unsweetened Greek yogurt

Directions:

1. Blend all ingredients until smooth.
2. Spoon into silicone molds, ice cube trays, or small cups.
3. Freeze for 3–4 hours or until firm.
4. Serve as a cool summertime treat!

💙 Optional Add-Ins:
🫐 Blueberries
🍓 Strawberries
🎃 Pumpkin purée (100% pumpkin)
🥕 Finely shredded carrots

⚠️ Remember: Always use xylitol-free peanut butter, as xylitol is extremely toxic to dogs.
