Meet Sandra Pascoe Ortiz, a chemical engineer and researcher at the Universidad del Valle de Atemajac in Zapopan, Mexico.

She has developed a groundbreaking bioplastic using juice from the nopal, or prickly pear cactus, which is one of Mexico's most resilient and abundant plants.

Unlike traditional petroleum-based plastics that take centuries to decompose and leave toxic microplastics behind, this cactus-based material is completely different.

It biodegrades naturally in soil within a month and dissolves in water or compost in just seven days.

It is entirely non-toxic and safe for humans and animals to ingest, meaning marine life can eat it without harm.

The material uses the natural sugars, pectin, and mucilage from cactus leaves, combined with plant-based additives.

Because workers harvest only a few leaves at a time, the plant continues to grow, making the process highly sustainable.

Cacti thrive in arid conditions with very little water and no chemical fertilizers.

This makes production far more environmentally friendly than corn-based bioplastics.

Ortiz's innovation offers a sustainable alternative for single-use packaging, bags, and disposable cutlery, while supporting local Mexican agriculture.

What if the passage of time is just a mental glitch?

Philosopher Adrian Bardon thinks that’s exactly what’s happening. In his new book, he argues that time – or at least the flow of time – is a psychological projection. It’s not an illusion in the optical sense. It’s a cognitive error: a misunderstanding of our own internal experience.

The theory builds on decades of work in physics. Einstein’s relativity showed that time isn’t absolute. It’s relative to the observer. People moving at different speeds can disagree on what “now” means, and both are right. That broke the idea of a universal present.

Physicists now describe time as part of spacetime: a four-dimensional block where all moments – past, present, and future – exist at once. In that framework, the universe doesn’t change. We just experience different parts of it, like reading frames of a film.

So why do we feel like we’re moving through time?

Bardon says that sense of movement is something the mind adds – the same way it adds color to light wavelengths or pain to tissue damage. We’re not seeing time directly. We’re building a mental model that includes it.

Maybe beyond some human perception but not all

Physicists have recorded a quantum information-transfer event so fast that it occurs in attosecondsa billionth of a billionth of a second. These ultra-fast interactions happen at speeds far beyond human perception and are crucial to understanding entanglement and electron behavior. The measurements relied on specialized lasers capable of capturing motion inside atoms. Researchers say this breakthrough will improve quantum computing and ultrafast electronics.
