Planning on going to horse shows or camping with your dog in Texas or New Mexico? Screwworm is spreading and can invade any openings on the body including the mouth, eyes, nose, even the reproductive areas. The screwworm lays eggs on the edge of the wound or opening, which hatch quickly and become maggots. One female can lay 200-300 eggs at a time! You can track the spread of screwworm on the USDA website (see link in comments)

New World Screwworms (Cochliomyia hominivorax) have been confirmed in Texas and are predicted to head north! These dangerous parasitic fly larvae (maggots) feed on the flesh and can cause serious wounds and even death if untreated. Dr. Glaza says "It has been confirmed in Texas and is theorized with natural spreading methods to make it to Kentucky in the next 2 years. However, with the travel of animals aided by humans, without vigilance, we could see screwworms here overnight". To help prevent spread of this disease please make sure any Large Animals coming from Texas have an appropriate Health Certificate, issued within 72 hours of arriving in the state. UPON ARRIVAL IN KENTUCKY (WITHIN 24 HOURS) animals from Texas MUST BE INSPECTED by a veterinarian to check for the New World Screwworm.
