Beat the Heat!!

And we're back for more summertime tips. If your pet loves to play outside in the sun, be sure that you take precautions to avoid a heat related injury. Ensure they have a shady area to get out of the sun when they need a break, as well as access to cool water. Much like humans, puppies and senior dogs can be at a higher risk of heatstroke, but one of the biggest heatstroke patients we see are our brachycephalic breeds. Bull dogs, pugs, anything with a 'smooshy face'. These breeds have restricted airways due to the structure of their faces. This means that they have to work much harder to breath, and pant to cool themselves off. So be sure to take it easy, and when in doubt, chill out. 😎

Meet our newest, and smallest, team member! This little girl was brought into the emergency clinic by a good Samaritan that had found her. Lily being the beautiful soul that she is, took this little baby home and has been doing around the clock care. syringe feeding every few hours. She is growing so fast and is thriving! She's starting to develop her own little personality. πŸ₯°Lily has found her a home once she is old enough to get her first round of vaccines. We hope she will live a long happy and healthy life with her new family, and until then we will soak up the kitten cuddle time!

It's time for another body language class. Today we will discuss posture, and although our pets will probably never have perfect table posture, they can tell us a whole lot if you pay attention.

Our dog's posture can be the base of figuring out how they are feeling. A loose wiggly body can be a sign of excitement or contentment. Pair that with ears that are pinned back and you may actually have a happy dog and not an angry dog, as pinned ears would suggest. A dog that is low to the ground with a wiggly butt and a wagging tail may actually be anxious or trying to appease you. A tense posture can show interest in something or be a warning that they are not comfortable and need a little space. Revealing their belly to you can be a sign of trust and playfulness, just as easily as it can be submission.

Cats that feel comfortable will usually lay stretched out to the side in a very relaxed fashion. When they are angry, they will sometimes roll slightly to the side and will be in a position that makes striking with their paws easier. In these situations, it is important to read the other body signs; to get a better idea of whether or not you have a happy kitty or a spicy kitty. If your cat is feeling sociable, they will usually show upright posture and a straight tail, or even a big stretch. A crouched kitty could mean they are scared or stressed out, or even not feeling well.

Welcome to the social corner! Kitten edition 🐱

Most people don't realize that there is a window of time that is incredibly important for introducing your new family member to new people, places and things.

For kittens the time between 3 weeks of age and 9 weeks of age is vital for introducing new things and setting the tone for a confident well-rounded cat.

Starting slow and quiet is usually the way to go for kittens, try hand feeding them or sitting with them quietly to allow them to get used to you. Reward brave behaviors like approaching you or checking out a new scent or space. Things like leaving on a TV or a radio can help your kitten get used to human voices. You can slowly expose them to other sounds that would be a regular occurrence in their lives, like doorbells, or Thunder. You can even bring your kitten to the vet for a happy visit. Our receptionists and technicians are always happy to snuggle a new kitten and offer a snack. This allows them to see different people in different settings with high reward (treats).

Socializing your new kitten and allowing them to experience new places, people and things will help them adjust to everyday life without becoming a spicy purr-ritio. 🐱

Dr. Meyer did a wart removal on Mr. Elwood. Using some lighter injectable sedation, she was able to remove the wart and stich him up quickly. Then she snuggled with him for a bit while he was waking back up. 😍
