Brothers from another mother recip cow style!
The call came in for a charolais embryo calf in the breech position in its braunvieh recip mom. After some work manipulating the babies legs, the Charolais calf was safely delivered. The recip cow was checked after the calf was pulled and low and behold there were two more feet inside. Assuming the embryo had split after it was implanted, we pulled the second calf! To our surprise, the second calf was in fact not at all related to the first! He was a brangus (the neighbors bull) x braunvieh natural calf. This recip cow was unknowingly bred by the brangus bull to produce the smoke colored calf and on day 8 an IVF Charolais embryo was placed in her uterus resulting in twins that are not at all related! She carried both safely to term just needing a little help to get them out. Safe to say this isn’t something you see every day! We are grateful to our clients for entrusting us with the care of their livestock and for this wonderful career we get to call work ❤️
