Meet Bentley!

Bentley is a 7 month old Manx kitten that presented for facial and ocular swelling that did not respond to antibiotics and anti inflammatories. Radiographs revealed an osteomyelitis of the underlying bone. Osteomyelitis is a severe, progressive infection and inflammation of the bone and bone marrow. Given that empirical antibiotics failed to offer improvement, Dr Mueller sedated Bentley to perform a bone aspirate. An in house cytology was performed where we found large amounts of Histoplasmosis. Histoplasmosis is a non-contagious fungal infection caused by the soil-dwelling fungus Histoplasma capsulatum. This fungus is found globally and may infect both humans and animals. The fungus thrives in warm moist environments and is commonly found in soil that contains bat or bird f***s (including chickens, pigeons, starlings, and blackbirds). In cats, histoplasmosis most commonly affects the lungs developing a severe fungal pneumonia; however, less commonly it can afftect the eyes, skin and other internal organs. In Bentleys case this fungus infection colonized his left eye and right facial bones. The treatment for Histoplasmosis is months of an antifungal medication called Itraconazole. Soon after starting treatment, Bentley began to quickly improve! He began playing again and his boney swelling resolved over the next couple of months. Bentleys owners were dedicated to his care and worked hard to ensure his recovery 💙
