Can we please just let dogs eat?

We take the bowl away so they learn we won't take it away.
Huh?

We don't build trust by repeatedly interfering, all just to prove they'll tolerate us doing it.
Yet around a dog's food, that's exactly what we've been told to do.

Put your hand in the bowl.
Take the bowl away.
Give it back.
Touch the food.
Pat the dog.
Move things around.

All supposedly so they learn to trust us.

But what if they're learning the opposite?

What if they're learning that a person approaching their food means something is about to happen?

That a hand near the bowl matters?
That maybe they need to keep an eye on us while they're eating?

We wanted our presence around food to mean nothing.
Then we made sure it meant something.

And while we're at it.

Can we please not ask a dog to earn every single bite of food through training?
They deserve to have full meals too.

No strings attached.

Imagine having expectations attached to every morsel.

Do this.
Wait for that.
Look at me.
Work for the next bit too.

Not every mouthful needs to achieve something.

Sometimes we can just put the food down.

And leave them alone.

MEETING METHODS MATTER

When two dogs meet, it’s not just about meeting each other.

Dogs are also experiencing the physical environment, unfamiliar scents and sounds, available space, resources, people, leash restriction, previous experiences, the other dog's body language as well as their current emotional state and level of arousal.

Where and how an introduction happens can influence the success of an initial meeting.

This is why meeting somewhere neutral that neither dog considers home is the recommended method. There are fewer established resources and fewer reasons for either dog to feel that their personal space is being invaded.

A successful introduction is about creating conditions where dogs can feel safe enough to decide what they think about each other.

Dogs don’t need to say hello to each other to have a successful encounter.

It’s not about trying to force an immediate friendship or acceptance.

Walking parallel, sniffing, looking at each other, looking away, exploring, moving further apart or gradually decreasing distance is all an important part of building a relationship and helping each dog feel safe.

Maybe they will become friends, maybe just comfortable companions or maybe just mostly ignore each other - all of these outcomes are still successful.

Successful introductions aren’t about forcing dogs be friends - it's about giving dogs enough choices to make their own decisions about how close they want to be.

📦Posey used to bark and lunge at the door every time someone approached—especially the mail carrier and deliveries. Now? Calm and quiet. Here's what changed:

▶️Behaviors that get rehearsed only get stronger. 💪Every time Posey barked and the "intruder" left (because the mail carrier was doing their job and moving on), her brain recorded that as a WIN—"I barked, and they fled. It worked!" That's a self-reinforcing loop, and the more it's rehearsed, the harder it is to break. It can also manifest in other situations too—on walks, backyard, guests, etc.

It's also physically taxing. A stress response like this can take 24-72 hours to fully settle, and since mail typically comes daily, many dogs never get the chance to reset before the next trigger hits—reactivity can build over time as a result.

✅️Two simple management tools made the difference for Posey:
📬A bin with a sign for all mail & packages—no more mailbox slam or door knocking trigger
🪟Window film on the front door—cuts the visual trigger of someone approaching.
🌎Small changes = big difference. Management isn't a permanent fix on its own, but it interrupts the rehearsal loop while you work on the underlying behavior.🐾
