⚠️Public Health Notice – Confirmed Rabies Case⚠️

Hood County Animal Control would like to make the public aware of a confirmed rabies case involving one of three puppies that were originally reported to have been found in Hood County, but were later confirmed to be found on County Road 230 in Erath County.

On June 9, our shelter was contacted regarding three puppies. At some point afterward, the puppies were found on Baker Road in Parker County by a Hood County resident. Although the circumstances of how they arrived there remain unknown, one of the puppies later began exhibiting symptoms consistent with rabies. The puppy was examined by a veterinarian, tested for rabies, and the test result was positive.

We are sharing photos of the puppies in an effort to identify anyone who may have had contact with them while they were in Hood County. If you recognize these puppies and had direct contact with them—particularly if you were bitten, scratched, or had contact with their saliva—please contact your healthcare provider and your local health department immediately for guidance.

This case serves as an important reminder that rabies is present in our area. Rabies is a serious viral disease that affects mammals, including pets, livestock, wildlife, and humans. While rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, prompt medical treatment after an exposure is highly effective at preventing illness.

To help protect yourself, your family, and your pets:
• Ensure all pets are current on their rabies vaccinations.
• Avoid handling unfamiliar animals, especially wildlife or stray animals.
• Report animals exhibiting unusual behavior, aggression, disorientation, or illness.
• Seek immediate medical attention following any potential rabies exposure.

We are sharing this information out of an abundance of caution and to help ensure that anyone who may have come into contact with these puppies can take appropriate action. Please share this post to help us reach as many people as possible.

💚 FEEL GOOD FRIDAY 💚
Meet Roamer—a once-stray pup who spent weeks on the streets of Burleson, cautiously avoiding help but capturing the hearts of an entire community.

With patience, care and a lot of late-night chicken snacks, local volunteers were finally able to bring Roamer to safety. He’s now living in a foster home, where he’s learning to trust people, nap peacefully and enjoy the simple joys of being a dog—like belly rubs, toys and breakfast in bed.

Roamer is thriving. He’s affectionate, gentle and fully potty trained. He follows his people around the house, loves exploring the backyard and continues to surprise everyone with how quickly he's adjusting to life off the streets.

While an early adoption opportunity didn’t pan out, Roamer is now in a new foster-to-adopt home—and so far, everything is going great. He’s already showing more trust, more joy and even gave his very first tail wag and kiss.

Thank you to everyone who has cheered him on, donated supplies and followed along. Roamer may have started out alone—but now, he has a whole city in his corner. 💚
