We would like to take this opportunity to thank the many volunteers who make these success stories possible: the folks who managed to prepare and deliver five meals a day for this fragile horse, as well as those who make sure that all of our horses receive the same level of competent, compassionate care, every day. You are the strong backs and big hearts of White Bird and you are deeply appreciated. Special shout out to the wonderful Mores, who safely delivered these horses to their destinations.

Today our beautiful Abe made his way from White Bird to our PERL facility. If you remember from an earlier post, we were contacted about Abe and his two friends two weeks ago due to their owners passing. Since our first meet and greet, I see a spark coming back into his eyes. This big gentleman has the kindest eyes and soul of any horse I have ever met. Many thanks to White Bird Appaloosa for stepping in for us, getting him picked up, and getting him the veterinary care he so needed until we could get him to PERL. They have given him the most excellent of care over the last 12 days and we are so beyond grateful to them. Welcome officially to PERL Abe. It’s a new season and a new day for you. ❤️

We have both good days and bad days in this line of work. Today just made our hearts happy. This lovely, gentle horse went home to Powhatan Equine Rescue. It was clear from the second he arrived there that he is exactly where he needs to be. Best of luck to you, Abe. It was a pleasure meeting you.

A big White Bird welcome to Victoria Solzbach who has joined the team as our new shoer, and to trainer/trimmer Katelyn Bryant, who will be doing our barefoot trimming! As our previous farrier moved to Ohio (Ol Raspy, and no, we did not drive him away!), we are fortunate in having found such skilled local talent to help keep our horses' tootsies in top condition!

There is nothing like a barn full of nice hay to help you sleep at night! Many thanks to the volunteers who came out to help us stack today. We are about half way to having what we need for the 2026 season. Progress!

Yesterday was "Part Two" of our hosting the Town of Farmville Parks and Recreation's Summer Camp. Activities for this event included our Horse "Meet and Greet," Model Horse Painting, and a fantastic vaulting demonstration by Kathy Pitt of Hunter's Ridge, the awesome Suffolk (rare breed!) gelding, Pal, and the Smooth Move vaulting team. We had a great time! Many thanks to our dedicated volunteers who helped us to prepare for, set up and manage this event, which helps to introduce youngsters to rescued horses. Who knows? Tomorrow's rescuers may be right in front of us!
