🦝🐾 Wildlife & Rabies Awareness 🐾🦇

Did you know rabies can be carried by wildlife such as bats, raccoons, skunks, and foxes?

Even indoor pets may be at risk if a wild animal enters the yard or home. Rabies spreads through saliva, most often from bites or scratches from infected animals.
Once rabies reaches the brain and nervous system, it causes severe neurological disease and is almost always fatal.

Signs in animals can include:

⚠️ Disorientation
⚠️ Aggression
⚠️ Excessive drooling
⚠️ Paralysis
⚠️ Seizures

Keeping your pet up to date on their rabies vaccine is one of the most important ways to keep them protected. 💉❤️

🐾 Rabies: Why Vaccination Matters 🐾

Rabies is a deadly viral disease that attacks the nervous system of mammals, including dogs, cats, wildlife, and humans. It is most commonly spread through bites from infected animals.

Once symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal.
Animals with rabies may show:

⚠️ Behavioral changes
⚠️ Aggression or unusual friendliness
⚠️ Difficulty swallowing
⚠️ Excessive drooling
⚠️ Staggering or paralysis
⚠️ Seizures

Because rabies is a serious public health risk, keeping pets vaccinated is extremely important and legally required in many areas.

💉 Vaccination is the safest and most effective way to protect your pets and your family.

🐱 What is the FVRCP Vaccine? 🐱

The FVRCP vaccine is a core vaccine that helps protect cats against three serious and highly contagious diseases:

🦠 Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis (Herpesvirus)

This virus affects the respiratory system and can cause:
⚠️ Sneezing
⚠️ Eye and nasal discharge
⚠️ Fever
⚠️ Eye ulcers and inflammation
Many cats can become lifelong carriers and may experience flare-ups during times of stress.

🦠 Calicivirus

Calicivirus is another contagious respiratory disease that can cause:
⚠️ Sneezing and congestion
⚠️ Painful mouth ulcers
⚠️ Fever
⚠️ Loss of appetite
⚠️ Limping in some cases

🦠 Panleukopenia (Feline Distemper)

Panleukopenia is a severe and potentially fatal virus that attacks the gastrointestinal tract and immune system, causing:

⚠️ Vomiting and diarrhea
⚠️ Severe dehydration
⚠️ Lethargy
⚠️ Fever
⚠️ Dangerous drops in white blood cells

These viruses spread easily between cats through sneezing, shared bowls, contaminated surfaces, and close contact.

💉 The good news: the FVRCP vaccine is highly effective and one of the best ways to protect your cat from serious illness. It’s especially important for kittens, outdoor cats, and cats who may come into contact with other felines.

Not sure if your cat is up to date on vaccines? Our team is happy to help keep your feline family members protected! ❤️🐾

🐾 Leptospirosis in Dogs: What You Should Know 🐾

Leptospirosis (often called “lepto”) is a serious bacterial disease that can affect dogs and is also a zoonotic disease, meaning it can spread to people.

Dogs typically become infected through contact with:

💧 Contaminated water (puddles, lakes, rivers)
🐀 Wildlife or rodent urine
🌧️ Wet soil or muddy areas

Once inside the body, the bacteria can spread through the bloodstream and damage major organs.

Symptoms can vary, but often include:

⚠️ Fever
⚠️ Vomiting and diarrhea
⚠️ Loss of appetite
⚠️ Lethargy
⚠️ Increased thirst and urination
⚠️ Abdominal pain
⚠️ Jaundice (yellowing of the eyes or gums)

In severe cases, leptospirosis can lead to kidney failure, liver failure, or even be fatal if not treated quickly.

Because it can also spread to humans, prevention is especially important. The leptospirosis vaccine is often recommended for dogs who go outdoors frequently, visit parks, hike, or encounter wildlife. 💉🐾

If you’re unsure whether your dog should be vaccinated, our team is here to help guide you based on your pet’s lifestyle and risk.

🩺🐾 Happy DVM Appreciation Day! 🐾🩺

Today, we celebrate the veterinarians who dedicate their lives to the health, comfort, and well-being of our pets.

Being a DVM is so much more than diagnosing illnesses and performing surgeries. It's providing compassionate care, comforting worried pet owners, making difficult decisions, celebrating victories, and advocating for animals every single day.

We are so incredibly grateful for the knowledge, dedication, and heart that Dr. Logan, Dr. Greene and Dr. Buehler all bring to Highline Veterinary Hospital. Their commitment helps strengthen the bond between pets and the people who love them.

Please join us in thanking our amazing doctors for their hard work, compassion, and unwavering dedication to the pets in our community. ❤️
