Dog Safety Tips for the Holidays
Part One
Happy Holidays! ❄️ 🐾
Years ago, our 18-week-old Portuguese Water Dog, Molly, surprised us by leaping onto the dining table to steal a slice of ham. One split second—and a lifelong lesson in prevention and management.
Holiday fun can get chaotic, so keep a close eye on kids and well-meaning adults eager to “treat” your dog. When needed, use baby gates, leashes, or tethers. A puppy-proofed home is the heart of a safe holiday.
Food 🥧
Many festive foods are dangerous for dogs.
Avoid candy, cooked bones, and anything containing xylitol. Always check ingredients—cakes, pies, baked goods, sugar-free ice cream, protein powders, and more may contain harmful sweeteners.
Holiday Plants 🪴
Holly, mistletoe, and poinsettias can be toxic. Secure decorations so they can’t be knocked to the floor—especially during merry moments with “that” relative who loves to get creative with mistletoe.
Emergencies 🚨
If your pet gets into something questionable, call your emergency vet immediately.

Home Safety
Decorations 🎄🎁
Keep candles, tinsel, edible-looking ornaments, and lights out of reach. Secure your tree so curious pups can’t topple it.
Store wrapped presents safely—some dogs think they’re toys! Give your dog a “designated box” with a treat toy if you want them to enjoy the fun safely.
Heat Sources 🔥
Keep pets away from fireplaces and space heaters.
Managing Guests & Holiday Stress
Guest Traffic 🚦
Provide a quiet retreat for your dog. Ensure they’re microchipped and wearing an ID tag—doors open often during the holidays.
Minimize Stress 🧘🏽
Dogs thrive on familiarity. Keep regular feeding, walks, play, potty breaks, and sleep on schedule. Watch for stress from noise, movement, or hands-on guests.
Introduce your dog calmly, offer a treat-dispensing toy, and prevent unwanted “corrections” from well-meaning relatives.
If your dog is prone to anxiety, talk to your vet or trainer about calming aids—and test them before the holiday.
Extra Help
A pet sitter or a trusted friend’s quieter home can give your dog a peaceful holiday, too.
Wishing you and your family a safe, joyful season!
