When a Simple Cyst Turned Out to Be Cancer

Many of you know Piper’s story and how far she has come since her past trauma. This is a different part of her journey—and an important reminder to keep an eye on every new lump or bump.

Piper had a small bump on her head that looked like a simple cyst. For several months, we watched it, took pictures and kept track of any changes. When it began to grow, became inflamed and eventually burst, I knew it was time to call our vet.

What we thought was a cyst turned out to be a mast cell tumor. Piper had surgery to remove it, and the pathology results showed it was a Grade 2 tumor. Thankfully, the margins came back clean.

After her diagnosis, we changed Piper to an all-raw diet and added functional mushrooms along with the supplements she was already getting. Our focus is supporting her immune system, her overall health and the active life she loves.

I’m sharing Piper’s story as a reminder to check your dog regularly. If you find a new lump or bump, contact your vet and continue monitoring it for changes. Not every bump is cancer, but you can’t always tell what it is just by looking at it.

Today, Piper is back to hiking, exploring and enjoying life as the happy, well-balanced girl we know and love.

Cancer is part of her story, but it doesn’t define her. 💜

Piper and Berlyn are a big part of why I started Thriving Pawz. Their journeys have encouraged me to keep learning, ask more questions, and find different ways to support them through nutrition, supplements, exercise, and confidence building.

As I continue learning with my girls, I hope sharing their experiences can help other pet parents along the way, too. 🐾💚

Confidence isn’t built by avoiding challenges—it grows when we work through them. 🐾

Today was a Happy Visit for Piper. She was a little overwhelmed and nervous at first, but with patience, treats, and positive experiences, she worked through it. By the end, she was relaxed, making friends, and didn’t want to leave.

For dogs that struggle with fear or anxiety, progress isn’t measured by perfection. It’s measured by small victories that build trust and confidence over time.

Every positive experience is a step forward. ❤️

Not every dog with itching, ear issues, or stomach upset has a true food allergy. 🐾

Sometimes the body is reacting to inflammation, gut imbalance, sensitivities, highly processed foods, or ingredients that simply aren’t the right fit for that individual dog.

That’s the hard part:

This is Frankie.
8 weeks old… and fighting for his life.

Those eyes should be full of curiosity… not exhaustion.

Just days ago he was playing in the grass.
