Chameleons have a built-in “telephoto zoom” lens effect.
Because their eyes feature a unique concave lens coupled with a convex cornea, images project larger onto their retina than they do in almost any other vertebrate. This gives them exceptional visual acuity, allowing them to pinpoint tiny insects from surprisingly far away before firing off their rapid-fire tongue.
