🍁 There's a chill in the air, and fall is settling in!

As the seasons change, it's time to start thinking about pasture management and preparing our horses for winter feeding.
🌾 Making the transition to hay: For horses still grazing, gradually introducing and increasing hay over the next few weeks can help ease the transition as pasture grass becomes less available. A little planning now can help keep their digestive systems happy as we head into winter!
❄️ A frost reminder for our insulin-resistant horses: Be sure to keep an eye on overnight temperatures! A hard freeze can cause grasses to accumulate sugars, potentially increasing the risk of laminitis in horses with insulin dysregulation. Talk with your veterinarian about managing pasture access as temperatures drop.

A little preparation goes a long way in keeping our horses happy and healthy through the changing seasons!🍂

🍰🐴 We heard it’s National Dessert Day! Of course, we love any excuse to spoil our horses.

But did you know that not every treat is a good treat for every horse? While we often show our love through food, some horses need to be a little more careful with their sugar intake.
Overweight horses are at an increased risk of developing insulin dysregulation and resistance, which can increase their risk of laminitis. For horses with metabolic concerns, sugary treats may need to be limited or avoided altogether.

The good news? There are plenty of ways to spoil your horse with extra scratches, attention, and quality time! 🥰

Remember, keeping treats appropriate and sugar intake in check is one more way to help our horses stay happy and healthy. 💕

🍂💩 Fall is a great time to talk about p**p!

We know… not the prettiest topic, but a fall f***l egg count is an important part of your horse’s wellness care.

F***l testing helps us determine which horses are shedding parasite eggs and can help guide an appropriate deworming plan. Not every horse needs the same dewormer or the same schedule, which is why targeted deworming based on f***l testing is so important.

😴 Did you know horses need approximately 3–6 hours of sleep each day?

Unlike us, horses typically don’t sleep for one long stretch. As prey animals, they tend to sleep in shorter bursts throughout both the day and night.
For some horses, especially as they age, getting comfortable enough to lie down—or getting back up—can become difficult. Arthritis, pain, or an uncomfortable environment may cause a horse to avoid lying down and can eventually lead to sleep deprivation.

🐴 As our horses get older, it’s important to pay attention to changes in their sleeping habits and behavior. Providing a safe, comfortable place to rest can make a big difference in their overall health and well-being.

Sometimes, a good night’s sleep is just as important for our horses as it is for us! 💙

🍁Fall is in the air and with that comes fall vaccines!
If you are in a boarding barn where horses are traveling year round or you are still participating in shows and trail riding we recommend getting a booster vaccine in the fall to keep horses protected.
If you did not receive a 5-way in the spring we recommend ensuring you horse is covered for rabies by getting a fall rabies vaccine.

As the weather cools and routines shift, it’s time to start thinking about your horse’s fall care. If you haven’t scheduled fall vaccines, dental exams, or deworming, now is a great time to get those on the calendar.

📢 We are officially ONE week away from our Dental Special! 🦷🐴

Regular dental exams and floats are an important part of keeping our horses healthy, comfortable, and performing their best.

As we head into fall and winter, dental work can become more challenging to perform outdoors. Colder temperatures can affect our equipment, the safety and comfort of our doctors and staff, and the recovery of sedated horses—especially if they become sweaty when temperatures dip below freezing.

As the weather gets colder, we may need to move dental appointments indoors or bring horses into the clinic to ensure everyone stays safe and comfortable.

If your horse is due for their dental care, now is a great time to get on the schedule! 💙
