The dog days of summer are that much harder to bear when you learn of the passing of a good friend. We received news today that Winston, the Great Dane, lost his battle with cancer this past weekend. He came to us as a young pup, albeit still larger than half the dogs at the Playpen, and joined his older sibling, Ivy, a sister from another litter. She kept a stern eye on her rambunctious younger brother who soon caught up and passed her in all measurables. That never stopped her from being the bossy older sister, which helped us keep Winny under control when he was being a wild teenage boy. It was best not to get in his way when a case of the zoomies came over him, hugging the wall became your best defense. We lost Ivy early even for a giant breed and Winston was noticeably sullen and a bit grumpy. He was soon joined by another Dane sister, Violet, and while he tried to exert his authority over her, she was a bit too sassy for him to entirely rein in. However, he was fiercely defensive of her and kept a close watch over to make sure that others not take advantage of her naivety. Like Fezzig, Winston couldn't help if he was the biggest and the strongest, but he never exploited that advantage to be a bully. He will certainly be missed by Violet, and his cousins, Norm and Cliff(not Danes, but still great dogs), but especially by his human family who took great care of him and loved him until the end and beyond. Fly high, Winny and say hi to Ivy for all of us on this side of Rainbow bridge.

We hit the "aisle of shame" at the local Aldi(look it up, it's a thing) and found a doggy splash pad that we thought we'd try out. It was fun while it lasted, about 5 minutes. We should have known better, if the dogs can put a hole in a hard plastic pool, an inflatable didn't stand a chance.

Today is not a good day, as we learned of the passing of another Puppy Playpen friend, Teddy, seen here with her Basset brother, Griz, who preceded her over Rainbow Bridge just two short months ago. Teddy, affectionately referred to as T***s by her dad, was among what we called our invisible dogs. Those are the dogs that never barked, never made a fuss, always played appropriately, always came when called, never caused any problems. This may sound wrong but these are the dogs that we sometimes forget are with us, because we never have to call out their name to correct a problem. They don't behave like they're attention starved and are happy for whatever pets they get, and will gladly step aside to share the love. In other words, the perfect dog, and with no disrespect to Griz, I believe her parents agree.
The only problem with a dog like Teddy is that if you should decide to get another dog, you're bound to be disappointed because no other dog could live up to that perfection.
Here's to a perfect pup, may she be happy to once again be running and playing with her big brother. Please join us in expressing our sincere condolences to her parents who now have two big holes in their hearts.

We are saddened to learn of the passing of an old friend, Oliver. We haven't seen him much in the last year due to changing dynamics in his family's schedule, but he had been a regular for almost a dozen years prior. Oliver would, in true chihuahua fashion, shake like a leaf as an initial defense mechanism however, anyone familiar with the breed will know that in an instant they can be fierce defenders of that which they've claimed as their own, like their families or a rather comfy resting spot. Having chauffeured Oliver home on numerous occasions, he was content to ride calmly in the front passenger seat, however, if you chanced to give him a quick pat on the head, he would decide that if you could do that, you could do more. On more than one occasion he was not shy to pull your hand from the wheel or gearshift to continue to administer to his desires.
Please join us in offering our condolences to Oliver's family and to wish him a happy reunion with his Puppy Playpen pals that have crossed the Rainbow Bridge ahead of him. Fly high little guy!

We were saddened today to learn of the passing of our long time friend, Griswold aka Griz or Grizzie. He usually joined us with his sister, Teddy (not pictured as she is considerably more shy than Griz , however she is not a Basset either). Griz came to us years ago, but he had the personality of a grumpy old man, suffering from a bad Napoleon complex. He appeared to envy the taller dogs and was never at loss for words in voicing his displeasure with them. He therefore was subjugated to little dog detail, which he certainly didn't mind, however being at eye level he had a decided weight advantage. Despite their stature, Bassets are deceptively fast and agile so you must be mindful of their playstyle as their low center of gravity, coupled with their ability to swing their back end around could sweep you off your feet, kind of like a jack-knifing tractor trailer.
When last we saw Griz, his years were beginning to tell on him, although he still possessed that familiar waddle and the exuberance to attempt to take the stairs two at a time, it was with considerably more effort.
We will miss him so we ask that you please join us in expressing our sincere condolences to his family and sister Ted.

It is with a broken heart that we must announce the passing of our good friend, Champion. He came to us as a doodle puppy eight years ago at our downtown shop. He was a playful friend to all over the years, and never met a dog he didn't like. He was a leader of the canine choir whenever an emergency vehicle passed by the shop with sirens blaring, much to the surprise of his people. He happily transitioned to our North Buffalo shop, continuing to add to his friends list. Champ has been met with adversity in recent years, sacrificing a leg to an aggressive tumor. But that did little to squelch his playful nature. He was back in daycare after a few weeks, demonstrating his resiliency like only a dog can and looked forward to bounding around with his buddies. There was apparently no slowing him down, however, the tumors returned and while his spirit was willing, his body could no longer keep up. Please join us in wishing our condolences to his parents and his kitty siblings. Fly high and run free again, Champion, you are already missed!

We received word this week that one of our past Puppy friends has crossed the rainbow bridge. Crazy Miss Daisy was a Great Dane mix and always had this pent up energy that would see her go from calmly walking around to a sudden burst like a wild horse breaking free. She caught me and my helper Charlie off guard more than a few times when we'd walk her through the building on a leash. She'd kind of mosey along and then leap ahead without warning and take us with her. She did this at every doorway and gate, hesitate, stop then boom! She would get so wild that one time when she had the zoomies outside, she swung her butt around to turn at the fence that she hit it and broke through four or five of the inner stockade pickets. Thankfully we had two layers of fencing or it could have been a jailbreak. We now have a much thicker style of fencing on the inner layer. She also once decided it would be a good idea to leap down from the porch to the ground in her exuberance to go home, all the while my hand was wrapped in her leash. To avoid going with her, or merely letting go to save myself, i instinctively held onto the gate and probably damaged my shoulder such that I can't throw a ball more than 10 feet anymore. I now brace myself with every dog, lesson learned.
Please join us in extending our condolences to Daisy's family.
