Recently, the Red Oak family took a special trip to visit our friends and partners at Deanna Rose Children's Farmstead!

Our staff and their kiddos had an amazing time feeding goats, fishing, exploring the playgrounds, and making memories together. While we're fortunate to spend time at the farm caring for the animals throughout the year, it was extra special to experience it on a day off and simply enjoy everything the farm has to offer.

We're so thankful for the opportunity to partner with such a wonderful community resource and spend quality time together outside of the clinic. Thank you, Deanna Rose, for a fun-filled day that our families won't soon forget! ❤️🐐🎣🌞

Have You Considered Pet Insurance?

Unexpected illnesses and injuries can happen at any time, and veterinary care can quickly become expensive. Pet insurance can help provide peace of mind by helping cover the cost of eligible veterinary expenses when your pet needs care the most.

At Red Oak Animal Hospital, we work with Trupanion, a pet insurance provider that offers coverage for unexpected accidents and illnesses. One feature many pet owners appreciate is Trupanion's ability to pay participating veterinary hospitals directly, helping reduce large out-of-pocket expenses at the time of treatment.

Pet insurance can be especially helpful for:
✔️ Emergency visits
✔️ Surgeries
✔️ Chronic illnesses
✔️ Diagnostic testing
✔️ Hospitalization

The best time to enroll is when your pet is young and healthy, before any medical conditions arise.

Have questions about pet insurance or whether it might be right for your pet? Our team would be happy to help point you in the right direction! 🐶🐱

Fourth of July is right around the corner!

Fireworks, parties, and celebrations can be a stressful time for many pets. If your furry friend struggles with anxiety during loud noises, now is the time to plan ahead!

Please remember that pets must be current on their annual wellness exam in order for our veterinarians to prescribe anxiety medications. If your pet is due for an exam, give us a call soon to schedule an appointment before the holiday rush.

Don't wait until the fireworks are already popping—we want to help your pets stay safe, comfortable, and stress-free this Independence Day! 🇺🇸🐾

Noticing bumps or raised welts all over your horse this summer? It could be hives caused by fly bites! 🪰🐴

Just like people, horses can have allergic reactions to insect bites. These reactions often appear as raised bumps across the neck, shoulders, back, or entire body. Some horses may only get a few bumps, while others can break out dramatically overnight.

Signs of fly bite hives can include:
• Raised lumps or bumps
• Itching or rubbing
• Swelling
• Hair loss from scratching
• Irritability or discomfort

The best way to help prevent fly bite reactions is good fly control:
✔️ Fly sprays
✔️ Fly sheets & masks
✔️ Clean stalls and standing water
✔️ Fans in barns
✔️ Keeping horses inside during peak fly activity

Another reason fly control is so important? Constant stomping from irritated horses can lead to sore feet and hoof problems. In summer, the ground is typically hard, dusty, and dry. When your horse spends their day stomping their feet, they’re causing a lot of concussion to the hoof and internal structures. Over time, this stomping can cause them to develop sore hooves. It also increases the risk of stone bruises if they stomp on a rock.

If your horse develops severe hives, facial swelling, sore feet, or seems uncomfortable, give us a call! Some horses may need medications to help calm the allergic reaction and keep them comfortable.

Kansas fly season is officially here! ☀️🐴🪰

June 5th is National Greyhound Day! 🩶🐾

At Red Oak Animal Hospital, greyhounds hold a very special place in our hearts. Dr. Sutter is a proud greyhound mom to Baker and Mocha, both adopted through amazing organizations, MOKAN Greyhound Adoption and REGAP Greyhound Adoption.

One of our technicians, Tristin, also shares a deep love for the breed. In fact, she and her husband actually met through a greyhound adoption program! At one point they had 5 greyhounds in their home. Currently, they are loving on their sweet 13-year-old greyhound, Rhythm. Soon, another long dog will be joining the family when Fae retires from her racing career. 🐕✨

Greyhounds may be known for their speed on the track, but at home they are some of the gentlest, sweetest couch potatoes around. Today we celebrate all the retired racers, adopted greyhounds, and the people who give them loving homes.

If your family is looking for another dog, consider adopting a greyhound, or consider fostering! The local groups are always needing help!

Peggy Sue was all smiles after her cystotomy surgery! ❤️🐾

This sweet girl came to see us for bladder stones — mineralized formations that can develop in the bladder and potentially block urine flow. Bladder stones can be painful and, in some cases, become a life-threatening emergency if left untreated.

Common signs of bladder stones may include:
🐾 Straining to urinate
🐾 Frequent urination
🐾 Blood in the urine
🐾 Accidents in the house
🐾 Discomfort while urinating

Thankfully, Peggy Sue is on the road to recovery and feeling much better! If you notice any urinary changes in your pet, give us a call — early intervention is important. ❤️
