The lifespan of Golden Retrievers has notably declined over recent decades, dropping from an estimated 16-17 years in the 1970s to an average of 10-12 years today.
This trend is largely driven by intense selective breeding that prioritizes appearance and popular bloodlines over health, resulting in reduced genetic diversity through the "popular sire effect"—where a small number of champion dogs sire hundreds of offspring, spreading harmful mutations widely.
Cancer is the dominant factor, accounting for up to 65-75% of deaths in the breed (far higher than most dogs), particularly aggressive types like hemangiosarcoma, lymphoma, and osteosarcoma.
