✨We are excited to announce the newest treatment modality at Durango Equine: Shockwave!!✨

🔊Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is an innovative and non-invasive therapy that is used in equine sports medicine to support healing and reduce pain.

🔊Shockwave accomplishes this by delivering high energy acoustic waves into a targeted area. This stimulates the body’s own healing response and works especially well on tendon, ligament, and other soft tissue injuries.

Main Benefits of Shockwave:

Did someone say Happy Hour?! 🍹

This time of year it is paramount to keep our equine partners cool and hydrated. One of Dr. Cooper’s favorite ways to accomplish this is by offering the horses a bucket of “sweet tea” (water + grain) each day to increase their water consumption. 💧

Other ways to keep our horses hydrated and happy:
🧂Electrolytes or a small amount of salt added to the grain
🪭 Plenty of shade, fans, and misters
🍌Cool fresh fruit such as bananas, apples, or watermelon
💦 Daily rinses (check water temp first!)

🚨It’s always scary when your horse steps on a nail, but the most important thing is to LEAVE the nail in the foot!

🩻This allows the Veterinarian to take an x-Ray and evaluate the exact location and path of the nail. Being able to rule out any tendon sheath or joint involvement is a CRITICAL part of evaluating a horse with a nail in their foot!

➡️ This condition is commonly referred to as a Street Nail.⬅️

🏥A nail that penetrates the joint or tendon sheath requires surgical intervention and can sometimes have a long and complicated healing process.

😮‍💨It’s safe to say this guy got very lucky, as this 3+ inch nail was far away from the important structures of the foot, despite looking very scary on presentation. He was able to be treated and sent home in a hoof bandage with a very relieved owner!

Out of an abundance of caution we made the decision to evacuate all client and clinic horses from the property of the Buckeye Equestrian Center this afternoon as the winds picked up and the fire spread further east towards the clinic.

Thank you to all of our clients and community members that reached out today offering trailers and places to house the horses. It means the world and shows your dedication to not only your animals but others as well. Thank you to Kendra and Tyler Cormany, Sovereign Farms, and Fred and Michelle Merrick for jumping in to help evacuate and house horses.

We are hopeful the fire will remain contained to the riverbed and as of now plan to be open for normal business hours tomorrow, Monday May 4th.
