My new foal exam today was this sweet filly that was born at an amazing 393 days of gestation - the longest one I have ever seen. Mom and baby are both happy and healthy.

As we are nearing the end of spring vaccination season, I wanted to share this example of the importance of vaccines. This horse presented 3 weeks ago with classical signs of tetanus including pr*****ed third eyelids, sawhorse stance with elevated tail, muscle rigidity and hypersensitivity to light and sound. Despite the guarded prognosis, we could tell he was a fighter and started aggressive treatment to give him a chance. Thanks to the support of his owner and the tireless work of the barn manager, he has beaten the odds and is expected to make a full recovery.
This disease is easily preventable with an annual tetanus vaccine which is considered an AAEP core vaccine. Tetanus usually comes from a contaminated wound although in this horses case a definitive source for the infection was not identified
