🌡️🐾 What Is Heatstroke? 🐾🌡️

As temperatures rise, it’s important to remember that dogs don’t cool down the same way we do. Dogs primarily regulate their body temperature by panting and through a small amount of sweating from their paw pads.

A normal dog temperature is 99°F–102.5°F. When a dog’s body temperature rises beyond what they can safely manage due to extreme or prolonged heat exposure, heatstroke can occur—and it can quickly become life-threatening.

🚨 Signs of Heatstroke – Seek Veterinary Care Immediately if You Notice:
• Heavy or rapid panting
• Difficulty breathing
• Excessive drooling or thick, sticky saliva
• Bright red, pale, or gray gums
• Weakness or lethargy
• Stumbling, wobbling, or confusion
• Vomiting and/or diarrhea
• Collapse
• Seizures
• Unconsciousness

⚠️ Moderate to severe heatstroke is a medical emergency.

If you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke, move them to a cool area, offer small amounts of water, use cool (not cold) water on the body (neck, armpits, inner thigh) and seek veterinary attention immediately.

☀️ Prevention is key:
✔️ Never leave pets in a parked vehicle
✔️ Always provide fresh water and shade
✔️ Avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest parts of the day

As the leaves change colors and the air turns crisp, (well maybe not in Arizona), we want to take a moment to wish you and your furry friends a spooktacular Halloween! 🎃

At Marketside Animal Hospital, we understand that pets are family, and we encourage you to celebrate this festive season with them in mind. Here are a few tips to keep your pets safe and happy this Halloween:

🎃Keep Candy Away: Chocolates and candies can be harmful to pets. Chocolate is particularly common this time of year, and if ingested by your pet, it can cause heart abnormalities and even seizures.

👻Costume Safety: If you dress up your pet, ensure their costume is comfortable and doesn't restrict movement or vision. Avoid costumes with parts that can be chewed off and swallowed. If your pet seems distressed or uncomfortable in a costume, it's best to skip it altogether.

🙄Safe Spaces: With all the doorbell ringing and trick-or-treating, create a quiet space for your pets to relax away from the commotion.
