Come for the games. Stay for the friendships. Find your herd.

Sometimes kids don’t need another lesson, another activity to master, or another place where they’re expected to perform.

Sometimes they just need a place to BELONG.

That’s what Games & Gab is all about!

We’re opening up our table at Hosanna Horse Haven for a relaxed weekly gathering where middle and high school students can enjoy games, laughter, conversation, and connection.

And while we’re having fun, something pretty amazing happens along the way!

Friendships begin to grow.
Confidence starts to build.

Reading, counting, and problem-solving skills get a little practice.

Communication and social skills develop naturally.

Patience, teamwork, and good sportsmanship become part of the experience.

No grades. No pressure. No expectations to be anyone other than yourself.

Just a welcoming place to laugh, learn, connect, and enjoy being part of the herd.

She happily held her own hoof up while he trimmed away.

Just a girl helping out her favorite farrier. ❤️

BREED SPOTLIGHT: MINIATURE HORSE

Our next Hosanna Horse Haven Breed Spotlight is all about a few very special members of our herd.

Meet Daisy, Misty and Ms. Muffit—our Miniature Horses!

Miniature Horses may be small in size, but they have just as much personality, intelligence and heart as their full-sized counterparts.

Miniature Horses are bred to resemble full-sized horses, only in a much smaller package. They are known for their gentle nature, expressive personalities and ability to form strong bonds with the people around them.

And don’t let their small size fool you.

These little horses can be curious, clever, playful and full of opinions. They may not be large enough to carry most riders, but they can still teach us some very big lessons about trust, patience and connection.

Daisy, Misty and Ms. Muffit each have their own unique personalities, but all three are loved members of the H3 herd.

And Ms. Muffit is also Cocoa’s mom!

She may be a Miniature Horse, but she gave us one very special Mini Mule.

They remind us that you don’t have to be big to make a big impact.

BREED SPOTLIGHT: MINI MULE

Our next Hosanna Horse Haven Breed Spotlight is a little different.

Meet Cocoa, our Mini Mule! ❤️

First fun fact: a mule isn’t actual a breed.

A mule is the offspring of a male donkey (jack) and a female horse (mare). A miniature mule typically has a Miniature Horse or other small pony-type mare as its mother, which gives us all that mule personality in a much smaller package.

And don’t let Cocoa’s size fool you.

Mules are well known for being intelligent, observant, sure-footed and very good at thinking things through before they act.

You’ve probably heard someone say “stubborn as a mule.”

But stubborn isn’t always the best description.

Mules tend to have a strong sense of self-preservation. If something doesn’t feel safe or make sense to them, they’re less likely to simply go along with it. You may need to slow down, communicate clearly and give them a reason to trust what you’re asking.

Sound familiar?

That’s actually one of the things we love about working with equines at H3. Sometimes the animal that won’t simply do what you ask is the one who teaches you the most about how you’re asking.

Cocoa may come in a smaller package, but there’s certainly nothing small about the personality inside it.

BREED SPOTLIGHT: MUSTANG

Our next Hosanna Horse Haven Breed Spotlight belongs to a pretty special old gentleman. ❤️

Meet Mikey, our Mustang.

Mustangs are descendants of horses brought to North America by Spanish explorers and settlers, with other domestic breeds contributing to the herds over generations. Living on the range shaped them into hardy, adaptable horses known for their intelligence, sure-footedness and strong survival instincts.

Unlike the other breeds we’ve featured, “Mustang” doesn’t describe one particular body type or color. Mustangs can look remarkably different depending on the herd and the ancestry behind them.

And then there’s our Mikey.

We don’t know Mikey’s exact birthday or even his exact age. Based on the best estimates from an equine dentist and veterinarian, we believe he is somewhere around 40 years old.

Yes. FORTY-ish.

When a horse comes to a sanctuary, sometimes pieces of their history come with them — and sometimes they don’t. We may never know every chapter of Mikey’s life before H3.

What we do know is the horse standing in front of us today.

He’s an old Mustang who has lived a whole lot of life.

Mustangs have survived for generations by being observant, adaptable and incredibly good at reading their environment. When you’re working with one, it’s worth remembering that those instincts aren’t flaws to overcome.

They’re part of what made the Mustang.

And at somewhere around four decades old, we’d say Mikey has earned the right to have a few opinions about how things should be done.

BREED SPOTLIGHT: SUFFOLK PUNCH

We’re changing things up for our next Hosanna Horse Haven Breed Spotlight. We’ve talked about several gaited breeds, but now it’s time to meet some of the heavy horses!

Meet Sherman & Wellington, our Suffolk Punches. ❤️

The Suffolk Punch is an English draft breed with a history stretching back hundreds of years. They were developed primarily for farm work, where strength, stamina and a steady temperament were incredibly valuable.

And here’s something interesting about the Suffolk Punch…

❤️ They are always chestnut!

Traditionally, Suffolk breeders actually spell the color “chesnut” — without the first “t.” Shades can range from lighter golden tones to deep, dark liver chesnut, but the breed is known for that signature color.

(Wait…aren’t they sorrel?
That’s what you might call their color in many other breeds! But in the Suffolk Punch world, they’re chesnut — and yes, Suffolk breeders traditionally spell it without the first “t.” Their chesnut coats can range from light and bright to a deep liver shade.)

Unlike some draft breeds that were developed for pulling loads on roads, the Suffolk was truly a farmer’s horse. Their powerful, compact build made them well suited for working heavy ground while still being efficient enough to work all day.

They are known for being strong, hardworking and generally willing horses — with a whole lot of horse packed into those big bodies. 😂

Today the Suffolk Punch is considered a rare breed, which makes having two of them here at Hosanna Horse Haven pretty special.

Of course, Sherman and Wellington would probably tell you that being rare isn’t nearly as important as making sure dinner arrives on time. 😉
