Happy World Turtle Day!

Now You Know - The Painted Terrapin (Batagur borneoensis), native to Southeast Asia, inhabits coastal estuaries and rivers. It is named for the vivid brushstrokes of red, gray, black, and white that males display during the breeding season. It is one of the few freshwater turtles known to share nesting beaches with marine turtles. Populations have plummeted due to decades of harvesting adults and eggs for food.

Turtle Survival Alliance supports conservation across its range, including Sumatra, Indonesia, and Malaysia, through community engagement, river surveys, nest patrols, and nest protection. These efforts have produced thousands of hatchlings released into the wild in key coastal areas.

Today is Save The Rhino Day so we thought we would spotlight a rhino species facing the serious risk of extinction in our Conservation Concern series.

Conservation Concern - In the past two decades, the Sumatran Rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis) has seen a 70% drop in population. Fewer than 80 individuals are left in the wild.

Every birth we experience here at the HLSR AgVenture Birthing Center is a special event, but some end up being a little more memorable than others… like this one😂

In this video you’ll see Dr. Brady and Rich Knebel from Miracle of Life Knebel Livestock Nursery & Birthing Center working together to resolve a dystocia. This calf was in a posterior presentation (i.e. a “backwards calf”), which is an emergent situation requiring immediate intervention to safely deliver the calf. This procedure is something our team is very familiar with, however one aspect we were not expecting was the surprise “splash zone” 😳😅 We think the commentary in the video perfectly sums up the rollercoaster of feelings this labor & delivery brought to us and the hundreds of HLSR visitors who got to witness this!😂
