When we have an orphaned animal in our care, Baloo is always ready to shower them with love! From antelope calves to kangaoo joeys, he knows just how to welcome each one into the pack and help them feel safe & comfortable💕

It’s International Armadillo Day!🕺🪩

DID YOU KNOW:

1️⃣There are 21 species of armadillo, but only the Nine-banded Armadillo is found in the United States!🇺🇸

🦠Armadillos are one of the very few non-human animal that spread leprosy😷

🏊🏻‍♀️Armadillos are great swimmers & can hold their breath for up to 6 minutes! Their heavy shells cause them to sink, enabling them walk underwater to cross streams, BUT if they want to float instead they’ll gulp air into their intestines until they’re buoyant🛟

🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒Female Nine-banded Armadillos almost always give birth to genetically identical quadruplets👯‍♀️👯‍♀️

🚶🏻‍♀️Although ‘dillos spend their day meandering at about 0.3mph, they can run up to 30mph in short bursts to evade danger🏃🏻‍♂️💨

⚠️There are lots of videos online of armadillos in captivity running around, which in many cases can just be them expressing excitement, playing, or getting the zoomies! However, the behavior seen in this video is called a “stereotypical behavior”, which is a repetitive action linked to chronic stress, frustration, and/or boredom. Ultimately, it’s an indicator that the animal may be lacking in mental and physical stimulation, or another species-specific need isn’t being met. An important aspect of responsible animal ownership is meeting the needs of the species and constantly engaging their bodies and minds via enrichment, training, and strategic enclosure/environment design (even for pets like cats and dogs!). This is a great example of how proper husbandry is just as important to an animal’s overall wellbeing as veterinary care, and why our team offers husbandry consultations in addition to medical services!

New World Screwworm (NWS) Treatment/Movement Certificates are issued for movement of animals out of a NWS Infested Zone within the state of Texas. Inspections can be conducted by veterinarians, state or federal animal health officials, and authorized NWS-certified inspectors.

Interstate movement of animals requires a certificate of veterinary inspection (CVI). Please contact your veterinarian for additional guidance. Requirements may vary based on the destination’s State Animal Health Official.
