🐍🦎 Happy Reptile Awareness Day — October 21! 🐢🐊

While we no longer have a doctor on staff who treats reptiles, we still want to use Reptile Awareness Day to share information and encourage responsible reptile ownership. If you have a reptile companion, make sure you know their species-specific needs and have access to a veterinarian experienced in reptile medicine.

Reptiles may be a little different from our furry friends, but they are fascinating animals with unique needs and an important place in our ecosystem. Today is a great opportunity to learn a little more about these incredible creatures!

🌡️ Reptiles rely on their environment to regulate body temperature. Proper heat and temperature gradients are essential for their health.

💧 Hydration matters! Depending on the species, reptiles may get water through drinking, soaking, food, or humidity in their environment.

🥬 Every species has different nutritional needs. A diet that is appropriate for one reptile may not be appropriate for another.

💡 UVB lighting can be essential for many reptiles. It helps certain species properly use calcium and maintain healthy bones.

🩺 Regular veterinary care is important. Reptiles can be experts at hiding signs of illness, so changes in appetite, activity, appearance, or behavior shouldn't be ignored.

🐢🐍🦎 The more we understand these amazing animals, the better we can care for them!

🐈‍⬛🖤 Happy National Feral Cat Day! October 16 🖤🐈‍⬛

Meet Binx! 🐾 This handsome little man came to us as a feral cat, but look at him now! 😻 Binx has shown us that with time, patience, and kindness, even the most timid kitties can blossom. Today, he’s about the sweetest little man ever, and we couldn’t be happier to celebrate him on National Feral Cat Day!

Did you know? Not all cats who live outdoors are the same, and feral cats deserve our compassion, too! 🐱

💚 Here are a few important things to know about feral cats:

🐾 Feral doesn’t mean unfriendly. Feral cats are generally unsocialized to people and may be fearful of human contact. Some, like Binx, can learn to trust people with time, patience, and gentle care.

🏡 Not every outdoor cat needs to come indoors. Some feral cats are happiest living outdoors in their familiar environment, where they can be supported through responsible community cat programs.

✂️ Spaying and neutering make a HUGE difference! Spay/neuter programs help prevent unwanted litters, reduce the number of homeless cats, and decrease the strain on shelters and rescues.

💉 TNR saves lives! Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) involves humanely trapping community cats, having them spayed or neutered and vaccinated, and returning them to their outdoor home when appropriate. This helps stabilize colonies and reduce future kitten populations.

❤️ Every cat deserves compassion. Whether a cat is a cuddly house pet, a shy former stray, or a feral community cat, they all benefit when we work together to keep them healthy and safe.

🎃🐾 Meet Julius, our handsome Halloween heartthrob! 🐾🎃

Julius stopped by with his dad, who came in to pick up some flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. While he was here, Julius hopped on the scale for a quick weigh-in and then worked his magic on our front desk staff to score a tasty treat! 🦴😍

Of course, he couldn’t leave without showing off his festive Halloween bandana and posing for the camera. 📸🧡💜 We think he absolutely nailed his photo shoot!

Who else thinks Julius deserves an extra treat for being such a good boy? 🐶🍬

🎃🐾 HALLOWEEN PET SAFETY: THE HAZARDS START BEFORE OCTOBER 31! 🐾🎃

Halloween is full of fun, costumes, candy, and spooky decorations, but did you know our furry family members can face dangers BEFORE, DURING, AND AFTER Halloween night? 👻🐶🐱

🚨 Here are some important Halloween pet safety tips to keep in mind:

🍬 Candy & Treats: Chocolate, sugar-free candy containing xylitol, and other sweets can be toxic to pets. Keep candy bowls, trick-or-treat bags, and wrappers out of reach—even before Halloween night!

🎃 Decorations: Lit candles, jack-o'-lanterns, fake cobwebs, glow sticks, batteries, and electrical cords can pose choking, burn, intestinal blockage, or other risks. Curious noses and paws can get into trouble quickly!

👻 Costumes: If your pet wears a costume, make sure it fits properly, doesn't restrict movement or breathing, and has no small pieces they can chew off or swallow. Always supervise them!

🚪 Open Doors & Strangers: With decorations going up, visitors arriving, and trick-or-treaters knocking, pets may become frightened or try to escape. Keep them secure in a quiet, comfortable room and make sure their ID tags and microchip information are up to date.

🕷️ Seasonal Plants & Items: Be mindful of unfamiliar plants, decorative gourds, and seasonal products around your home. Keep anything your pet might chew or swallow safely out of reach.

🧹 After Halloween: Don't forget to check your yard, sidewalks, and home for dropped candy, wrappers, lollipop sticks, broken decorations, and other leftovers. The fun may be over, but the hazards can remain!

❤️ REMEMBER: Halloween safety isn't just about one spooky night. As soon as decorations, candy, and costumes enter your home, it's time to start protecting your pets!

If you suspect your pet has eaten something toxic or swallowed a foreign object, contact your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary clinic promptly. Don't wait for symptoms to appear.

🎃🐾 Meet Archie, our honorary receptionist and treat shopper! 🐾🎃

Archie was helping Bev out at reception while waiting for Mom to come pick him up, but we have a feeling he had another important mission on his mind… 🦴🛍️ SHOPPING FOR TREATS! 😂❤️

With that adorable face and those puppy-dog eyes, we’re pretty sure Archie knows exactly how to convince someone to add a few extra goodies to his shopping bag! 🐶🛒

We’re not sure how much work he got done at reception, but he definitely earned Employee of the Day for being this cute! 🥰
