We want to make you aware that New World Screwworm (NWS) has been confirmed in Zavala County, Texas. At this time, Texas officials have confirmed a single case, with no additional detections reported. USDA and state officials have activated established response plans, including movement restrictions in the affected area, expanded surveillance efforts and the release of sterile flies; a proven tool for controlling and eradicating New World Screwworm populations. These movement restrictions apply to a restricted zone extending 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) around a confirmed detection, and animal movement may still be permitted with approval from the appropriate authorities.



While this is a significant development, it is important to remember that New World Screwworm is treatable, and there are well-established protocols that can lead to successful outcomes when cases are identified and addressed early. AQHA members are encouraged to speak with their veterinarians for guidance on prevention, detection and treatment options.



As horse owners and caretakers, vigilance will be critical in the weeks and months ahead. Horse owners should closely monitor animals for wounds and cuts, as well as surgical sites and other areas that may attract flies. Keep wounds clean and protected whenever possible and consult your veterinarian promptly if you observe larvae or signs of infection. If New World Screwworm is suspected, do not move the animal and contact your veterinarian immediately.



"We've heard time and time again that the best thing you can put on your animals is your eyes," said Katie Reynolds, AQHA director of youth development and public policy. "Early detection is key with this pest, and experts know that New World Screwworm is treatable with medication. Now that we know New World Screwworm has been found in Texas, we're asking our members to stay informed and follow the expert advice available to all of us through our veterinarians and through state and federal resources."

This is Dale's daughter, Savannah. For those that have not heard he is in the hospital right now and is unable to work. When he gets out he will tell y'all what is going on. My dad is just usually a very private person which is why this has been vague.

I have been trying to text everyone to figure out when y'all are due and addresses. There is an organization my dad is part of and they are getting a group of farriers together that are going to keep y'all up to date and not fall behind. I have been told they will take no profits and it will all be going to my dad. If I did not get in touch with you, please text my dads phone or my number 325-998-7980. All I will need from y'all is the number of horses to be done, shoes or trims, when y'all are scheduled for, or when he was supposed to come out to take care of you. And of course your address and a good number to contact. Bare with me as I attempt to get y'all appointments with one of the guys.

Club footed yearling. Vet had cut the inferior check ligament 4 weeks ago. Jumped in half a rasp tang into the toe of a 000 shoe and concaved out the branches. We shall see how it goes.

There are times when it seems counterproductive to wear out a trench going from anvil to horse get that perfect fit. However, when you pick up the foot after 9 weeks and it still fits properly, it makes it worthwhile. BTW I nipped off a little over an inch off that hoof.

Well it's that time of the year. Abilene had a positive test come back on a mosquito for West Nile Virus. Please make sure your horses, donkeys and or mules are up to date. Contact your vet if you have any questions.
