🐾 GROWLING IS COMMUNICATION, NOT BAD BEHAVIOR! 🐾

Growling is one of the ways dogs communicate that they're uncomfortable, scared, overwhelmed, or need some space. It's their way of saying, "Hey, I'm not okay with this. Please back off!"

🚫 Growling should NEVER be punished!

When we scold or punish a dog for growling, we aren't changing how they feel about the situation. We're simply teaching them that communicating their discomfort gets them in trouble.

A dog that learns not to growl may eventually skip that warning and go straight to snapping or biting. We've essentially taken away their warning system without addressing the underlying problem.

💜 So what should you do when your dog growls?

🐶 Listen! Your dog is telling you something important.

🐶 Give them space. Don't force them to continue an interaction that's making them uncomfortable.

🐶 Look at the bigger picture. What triggered the growl? Was someone approaching their food? Were they being hugged? Was another dog invading their space?

🐶 Address the underlying issue. Work on helping your dog feel more comfortable through positive experiences, confidence building, and appropriate training.

Our goal should never be to silence our dogs. It should be to understand what they're communicating and help them feel safe enough that they don't need to growl in the first place.

It’s the people behind the scenes who help make a business special. Heather is an essential member of our back of house crew - and today marks 3 years with ZenDog! From cleaning and feeding to loving each dog like her own, dance parties in the yards and putting a smile on everyone's faces, she does it all! 🐾

Everyone give a big round of a-paws for our October Dog of the Month, Roast! 💜

This little guy is truly the best! Roast is a regular in our structured Day School program and does such a great job with the routine. He enjoys his time with his friends, participates in activities, and has become such a fun part of our ZenDog crew.

One of the things we love about structured Day School is getting to know each dog as an individual and watching them grow more comfortable and confident within the program—and Roast is a perfect example of that!

We’re always happy to see this sweet little face walk through the door. 🥹🐶

We’re so excited to welcome Tilly and Archie to our Day Training Program and Ralphie to our Board & Train Program! 🎉🐶

Their training journey starts with the foundation of building clear communication, engagement, confidence, focus, and the everyday skills that help dogs thrive in the real world. We’ll be working on creating strong habits, reinforcing good choices, and helping each of them learn solid manners and commands so they can be successful both at Zendog and at home. 💚

🎃🐾 THE ZENDOG HALLOWEEN COSTUME CONTEST IS COMING! 👻

Get those costumes ready because our pups are taking over Halloween! From October 19–23, Day School dogs can participate in our Halloween Costume Contest!

👻 Here’s how it works:

Send your dog’s costume with them to Day School anytime during October 19–23. Please make sure costumes are safe, comfortable, easy for our staff to put on, and labeled with your dog’s name.

📸 We’ll dress them up and take their official costume contest photo.

🎃 On Friday, October 23, we’ll post all of our contestants together in a Facebook album.

👍 Then it’s time to VOTE! Each like or reaction on your dog’s individual photo counts as one vote, so be sure to share their photo with your friends and family!

🏆 The dog with the most votes wins a FREE Day of Day School + a Spa Day!

Voting will stay open through Thursday, October 29, and we’ll announce our winner on Friday, October 30!

We can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with. Let the spooky season competition begin! 🎃👻🐾
