Your dog doesn’t need every moment with you to be a training session.
When we’re working through difficult behavioral challenges, it’s easy to get caught up in what our dogs aren’t doing, what we need to fix, and what we need them to learn next. Before we know it, we’re spending so much time managing behavior that we forget to simply enjoy the dog in front of us.
One of the best ways to reduce frustration (for BOTH of you!) is to make time for fun together.
🐕 Play a game they love.
🛋️ Hang out on the couch and enjoy a quiet moment.
🏃♂️ Run around together and be silly.
🎾 Find activities you both genuinely enjoy.
These moments matter! They help build a stronger bond, create positive associations with spending time together, and remind both of you that your relationship is about so much more than training.
And guess what? A stronger bond can help your training, too. When we take the pressure off and focus on enjoying our dogs, we create more opportunities for connection, engagement, and progress.
Especially when you’re working through challenging behaviors, remember that your dog is more than the behavior you’re trying to change.
Sometimes, the best thing you can do for your training is put the training aside for a little while and just have fun with your dog.
Build the relationship you want, not just the behaviors you’re working toward. 🐾
