'When he was fighting he used to go to hospitals and nursing homes to cheer people up. He usually had this big entourage of people walking with him, and he was at a hospital and he was walking and the administrator hurried him past a room.

Ali said, ‘Who’s in that room?’ The administrator said, ‘Oh, you don’t want to go in there. He’s an old man and he hasn’t spoken to anybody in years and I wouldn’t go in there.’ And Muhammad said, ‘No, I want to go in there.’

So Muhammad walked in and there was this old African-American man. He was wizened and bent over and Muhammad came up to him and stood in front of him and said, ‘Old man, you know who I am?’ And the man looked up and he said, ‘Yeah, I know who you are.’ And Muhammad said, ‘Well, who am I?’ And the man said, ‘You’re Joe Louis.’

Everyone was all startled and Muhammad shushed them all up and walked out of the room. And he said, ‘If it gave pleasure to that old man to think he met Joe Louis, then I’m Joe Louis.’'
