My final Body Language training tip for this month is that behaviors that are performed out of context are often stress signals.

I encourage you to specifically focus on these behaviors to help your dog feel like you understand them and that you can help them in uncomfortable situations.

✨ Shaking off when not wet

✨ Yawning when not tired or just waking up

✨ Sniffing the ground when there's nothing there

TRAINING TIP: Look for behaviors that are out of context. These are often stress signals.

If you’ve found this series of tips helpful, let me know! I’d love to hear your feedback. You can check out my previous tips on my profile too!

Virtual training has been particularly advantageous for puppy training. Puppies can be too excitable to focus on a new person in the environment. The impulse control part of their brain is “under construction.” By removing the huge distraction of a shiny new human, they are able to absorb more information and actually learn more deeply from you.

And in the blink of an eye... IT‘S ALMOST 2022!! When did that happen? 🙃

Is anyone else blown away by how fast this year went by?!

Since we’re approaching the end of the year, I’m sharing 4 ways I am going to prioritize joy for myself and my family. Experiencing joy is healing, and after the challenges of this year, it’s especially important to bring it to the front of our minds.

✨1. Go on more hikes with my dogs. Getting out of the city is always great for recharging my battery, and it is absolutely joyful to see my dogs running around the woods living their best lives.

✨2. Teach my old dog some new tricks. He has slowed down a lot these days, but it’s still so important to keep his brain working, and it’s so rewarding for me to maintain that bond with him that we get from working together to learn something new.

✨3. Be on the lookout for new adventures. I love trying new and fun things, and so to my kids, human and canine!

✨4. Notice daily moments of joy. For me, when I’m walking a dog and they look up at me with a face that clearly shows how happy they are to be outside at that moment, that brings me joy! I want to stop and savor moments like this.

Are you also working on prioritizing joy? What are some ways that you’re doing that? Tell me in the comments below 👇

Virtual dog training is a new idea for many dog owners and it's common to think that virtual training is less effective than in-person.

Here are three reasons why it might be the best thing for you and your pup to try.

✨ Your trainer will be able to see your dog's natural behavior without being a major distraction in the room. some behavior issues like separation anxiety or fear of strangers actually require virtual training - at least in the beginning.

✨ It is absolutely necessary to do a lot of talking with owners before a trainer can develop an appropriate training plan. Your dog doesn’t need to be involved in that directly, and it can be easier for everyone to focus if they’re not.

✨ In most cases, I’m training owners to train their own dogs anyway, and it can be very helpful for dogs to learn right off the bat that they listen to their owners, not first the treat lady and then the owners.

Did you know that using food to train separation anxiety can actually be a bad thing?

🤯🤯🤯

I know, I know. It’s counterintuitive to think that treats can make our dogs feel LESS calm when they’re alone. But it’s true and it’s something all us dog parents REALLY need to think about.

When it comes to any training, The type of reinforcement and the way it is delivered affects the outcome. If the treat is too exciting, you’re going to train a dog to be hyped. If you give your dog a treat then you walk out the door, your dog is going to not only be frustrated that you’re gone but also that their source of treats is gone. So the type of treats we use and how they are delivered is really important to consider. This is VITAL information to help us adjust as needed!

I always tell my clients when it comes to their dog’s separation anxiety... It’s not that we can’t use food in training for this, there are times when it’s extremely helpful. But it has to be done strategically.

Now I wanna ask you… have you tried treat-based separation anxiety protocols that haven’t worked? If not, don’t fret. I’ve got ya!! Just shoot a DM my way and we can get started on addressing your dogs separation anxiety.

Teaching your dog basic cues around the house can be a lot of fun. Here are 3 tips to get you started!

✨ Start off with deciding on a cue that will actually be useful in your daily life.

✨ Find an appropriate reward for your dog, either treats or a fun game they like to play

✨ Make sure you mark when they do the correct behavior with a click or the word “Good!” And treat immediately following.
