As with any new facility, when we moved into our current location inside the Brooklyn City Hall in May of 2023, a few minor issues cropped up that nobody thought about. One of those was the grass outside the exterior portion of the dog kennels. Since this grass gets cut several times a month, the clippings seemed to always blow into the dog kennels. No matter which way it was mowed or which way the wind was blowing the clippings always seemed to end up inside the dog kennels. It would then take our Kennel Manager extra time to clean up all the grass clippings.
By early 2025, after sweeping grass clippings for the past two years, our Kennel Manager came up with the idea that maybe installing pavers in this area would abate this problem. As luck would have it, around this same time it was announced that as part of the reconstruction of Brooklyn's Veterans Memorial Park, the engraved pavers from the 1996 "Buy a Brick" program would be removed and disposed of once everyone who wanted to retrieve their engraved paver had done so. After calculating the pavers needed it was determined the remaining engraved pavers would be sufficient to cover this area. An added bonus was the pavers matched well with the new City Hall's color palette! With permission, our Kennel Manager removed all the unclaimed engraved pavers and transported them to City Hall. It should be noted that had people not first removed their pavers, removing the remaining ones would have been a very difficult task, if not impossible. As it was, since there were so many gaps from the pavers already removed, our Kennel Manager was able to quickly shift the paver pattern as needed to more easily remove all the remaining engraved ones.
Unfortunately, mainly due to the weather, this project kept getting delayed, but we are happy to report installation was finally completed in May of 2026, which was some 30 years after they were first installed at the Veterans Memorial Park. The remaining engraved pavers were just enough to cover the area adjacent to the dog kennels and also allowed for a small area where we could hide our trash and recycling cans from passing pedestrians and traffic. We ended up with less than 10 extras which we will keep on hand just in case any of these get damaged somehow. Since this isn't an area which will see a lot of foot traffic, as it's directly adjacent to our concrete walkway, we expect these pavers to "live on" for several more decades at the very least. So if you or someone you know thought their engraved paver was disposed of, it was not, and they are all now serving a new useful purpose!
