People often ask if I want my dogs to be friendly. The answer is yes but only when I say it’s okay. A well trained dog doesn’t assume every person or every dog wants to interact. They learn to stay engaged with their owner until they’re given permission. In this video, another dog is running around just a few feet away. My dogs aren’t worried about it. They aren’t fixated on it. And when they’re released, they don’t run to the other dog, they run to their reward. That’s not because they don’t like other dogs. It’s because they’ve learned that impulse control comes before freedom. Neutrality isn’t about taking the fun away. It’s about giving your dog the ability to make good decisions, even when distractions are everywhere.

That’s what creates reliable off leash freedom. 💯

One of the biggest misconceptions about e-collar training is that the dog is immediately being corrected.

That’s not what conditioning is.

First, the dog learns how to turn the stimulation off by performing a behavior. The pressure becomes information, not punishment. Once the dog clearly understands the command and how to respond, corrections can be layered in for noncompliance if needed.

Understanding the difference between teaching and correcting changes everything.

Most people are trying to exercise their dog before they’ve taught their dog.

If your dog pulls for 2 miles, you’ve just rehearsed pulling for 2 miles.

I’d rather spend 10 minutes in front of my house teaching leash pressure, engagement, and position before I ever worry about distance.

A walk isn’t just exercise. It’s an opportunity to teach.

The better your training gets, the more enjoyable your walks become. 🐕‍🦺

If your dog keeps breaking Place, stop blaming your dog. Every repetition is a lesson. If your dog regularly leaves the bed, they’re getting really good at leaving the bed. Be intentional about what you rehearse.
