One of the biggest misconceptions about e-collar training is that the dog is immediately being corrected.

That’s not what conditioning is.

First, the dog learns how to turn the stimulation off by performing a behavior. The pressure becomes information, not punishment. Once the dog clearly understands the command and how to respond, corrections can be layered in for noncompliance if needed.

Understanding the difference between teaching and correcting changes everything.

Most people are trying to exercise their dog before they’ve taught their dog.

If your dog pulls for 2 miles, you’ve just rehearsed pulling for 2 miles.

I’d rather spend 10 minutes in front of my house teaching leash pressure, engagement, and position before I ever worry about distance.

A walk isn’t just exercise. It’s an opportunity to teach.

The better your training gets, the more enjoyable your walks become. 🐕‍🦺

If your dog keeps breaking Place, stop blaming your dog. Every repetition is a lesson. If your dog regularly leaves the bed, they’re getting really good at leaving the bed. Be intentional about what you rehearse.

A lot of people think punishment shuts dogs down.

The reality is that a fair correction for a behavior the dog already understands doesn’t end the relationship, kill motivation, or make the dog afraid to work.

In this clip, the dog is told “Out.” The dog understands the command. The dog chooses not to comply. The dog is corrected. The dog complies. The dog is rewarded. We continue playing.

No grudge.
No resentment.
No shutdown.

Just clear communication and accountability.

Correct the mistake. Reward the solution. Move on.

Play is one of the best ways to teach dogs how to think clearly in high states of arousal.

If we can rehearse obedience while a dog is excited, chasing, and engaged… we increase the probability of those behaviors showing up in real life too.

Training isn’t just about commands.
It’s about building clarity and self control through repetition.

Sometimes dogs get clingy during training, especially when they know you’ve got a good reward in hand. This hack will help to create space when practicing recall reps, but still keep your dog engaged.

Outside of dog training, I do things that challenge me not always because I genuinely enjoy them, but because they’re hard. If I’m going to push people to do the little things, I want y’all to know it’s coming from someone who’s willing to do hard things too. I really practice what I preach and try to stay in line with the words that come out of my mouth. This 13.1 was my first time formally running in an organized event, and I’m already looking forward to doing it again and pushing even harder next time. This is Melo outside of dog training. Slowly but surely, I want y’all to get to know me a little more on this page. I’m definitely more than just a dog trainer, and I want to start sharing more of my life with you guys starting with this!
