💚 World Mental Health Day | October 10th 💚
Today, we want to take a moment to talk about something that deserves so much more attention, especially in veterinary medicine: mental health.
At ARPets Hospital, we spend our days worrying about the health and happiness of our patients, but we also care about the people behind their care. Our staff, our clients, and everyone in our community deserves compassion, understanding, and support. That includes on the days when life feels a little heavier than usual.
Veterinary medicine is a profession built on love, but that love comes with an emotional toll that not everyone sees. We get to celebrate the happy moments, the recoveries, and the lives we help save. But we also carry the weight of the patients we lose, the difficult conversations, the financial limitations that sometimes stand between a pet and the care they need, and the heartbreak of loving an animal we just can't save.
We deal with long days, constant stress, compassion fatigue, and burnout. We worry about our patients long after we leave work. We replay cases in our heads, wonder if we could have done something differently, and carry home the emotions of the day. And somewhere in the middle of all that, we're still trying to manage our own lives, our own problems, and our own struggles.
The truth is, veterinary medicine can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be incredibly hard. And sometimes, it can be downright thankless.
The veterinary profession has a serious mental health crisis, with research showing an elevated risk of su***de among veterinary professionals. That's something we cannot afford to ignore. Behind every statistic is a real person. A veterinarian. A veterinary technician. A receptionist. A kennel attendant. Someone's spouse, parent, friend, or coworker. Someone who spends their days taking care of others and may be struggling silently themselves.
We never really know what someone is carrying when they walk through the door, put on their scrubs, answer the phone, or start another busy day. Sometimes, the people who spend the most time caring for everyone else are the ones who need someone to check on them, too.
To our ARPets team and all of our fellow veterinary professionals, please remember this: You are more than your job. You are more than the patients you save, the emergencies you handle, and the hard days you push through. You don't have to be okay all the time. You are allowed to be tired, overwhelmed, frustrated, and human. You deserve rest, support, and compassion just as much as you give those things to others every single day. 💚
To our clients, we know how much you love your pets. We love them, too. When your pet is sick, when you're waiting on test results, or when you're facing a difficult decision, we know how scary and overwhelming that can be. Please know that you're not the only one carrying that worry. We worry about your babies, too. We think about them, we hope for the best, and sometimes we carry those worries with us long after you've left the clinic. One of the hardest parts of veterinary medicine is having to take a deep breath, put our emotions to the side, and walk into the next appointment ready to give another patient our very best, even when we're still processing what just happened with the last one. We have to learn to compartmentalize because there are more patients who need us, more families counting on us, and more lives we're trying to help. But that doesn't mean we stop caring. It doesn't mean the hard cases don't affect us, or that we just forget about the pets we've worried over all day.
We're human, too. We celebrate with you, we worry with you, and we grieve with you. We know emotions can run high when someone you love is sick, and we understand that fear can sometimes come out as frustration. But please remember there's a real person on the other side of that phone call, at the front desk, in the exam room, and caring for your pet behind the scenes. A little patience, kindness, and understanding can mean more than you may ever realize. 💚
This reminder isn't just for those of us in veterinary medicine. It's for everyone. We all have things going on outside of what other people see. We all have hard days. Check on your people. Give yourself some grace. Be kind, even when you don't know the whole story.
You don't have to wait until you're at your breaking point to ask for help. You don't have to carry everything alone. And you never have to earn the right to be cared for.
Your mental health matters. Your struggles matter. YOU matter, even on the days when you feel like you're falling short. 💚
If you're struggling, please reach out to someone you trust or a mental health professional. If you or someone you know needs emotional support in the U.S., you can call or text 988, any time, day or night.
Today, we're sending so much love to our ARPets family and everyone in the veterinary community. We see you. We appreciate you. And we hope you remember to take care of yourselves, too.
Because the people who care for everyone else deserve to be cared for, too. 💚
