Have you ever wondered why your dog is breaking toward the end of hunting season compared to when he’s fresh out of training?

Over the next few weeks, follow along as we break down how small things dogs get away with in the field, combined with handler mistakes, can gradually lead to bigger problems. What may seem insignificant in the moment can become a habit over time, turning a dog that was steady coming out of training into one that breaks in the field.

Sometimes, it’s not one big mistake. It’s a series of small things that add up.

Stay tuned…

🐾 EXCITING NEWS AT RIDGEMARK RETRIEVERS! 🐾

We’re proud to announce a litter out of HRCH Maggie’s Miss Barkansas “Kate,” and HRCH Ridgemark’s Kickin Up Gold Dust WCX “Dusty,” with one Grand pass! 🦆

Both dogs come from outstanding pedigrees and have completed genetic testing, health screenings, and OFA clearances. These are two exceptional working retrievers we’re incredibly proud of, and we’re excited to see what their puppies accomplish in the field!

These pups are being raised with a strong foundation for their future as hunting companions, and we’re looking for dedicated hunting and working homes where they can reach their full potential.

The puppies will be ready for their new homes in approximately five weeks, with only three spots potentially available!

Kate is owned by Maggie Williams, and Dusty is owned by Ridgemark Retrievers. All puppy placements will be handled directly through Maggie.

🚫 Casting Mistakes Pt. 2: Casting Too Fast

When teaching hand signals, one common mistake is moving too quickly. Give your dog time to see, process, and understand the signal before expecting a response.

Clear, deliberate hand signals help build confidence and consistency in the field. 🦆

🐾 DOG OF THE WEEK | MAEVE

Meet Maeve, a female field-bred Golden Retriever owned by Chase Carlisle of Memphis, Tennessee. Maeve is entering her fourth month of our Gun Dog Program and is out of the Top Brass line, known for producing high-drive field-bred Goldens.

Her natural drive and desire to work have made her a great dog to develop. As she moves into this next phase of training, we’ll begin incorporating more realistic hunting scenarios, including working from the pit, navigating decoys, honoring, and increasing her exposure to birds.

🦆 We’re looking forward to continuing Maeve’s development and building on the foundation she has established so far.

At just 4 months old, Walker and Hershel are building the foundation for their future as hunting companions. 🦆

At this stage, the focus is on developing natural drive, confidence, and desire through positive experiences with bumpers and birds. Puppies begin on a long line, which is gradually shortened as they mature, with the goal of transitioning to a standard leash by 6 months, when formal obedience training begins.

These early experiences help build the foundation and drive they’ll carry into their future training.

Gunfire confidence starts with the right introduction. ✅

Gun shy testing allows us to evaluate a dog’s natural response to gunfire before progressing further in training. We start at a safe distance, watch body language closely, and build positive associations gradually without “forcing” the process.

A confident gun dog is made through proper exposure, patience, and good timing. ⏱️
