What is the value of a Microchip?

In the last 2 weeks we have had 2 pets reunited with their owners all because of one simple tool - the microchip. One animal had been missing for a couple weeks, and the other for close to a year. For unknown reasons both pets were found far from home. While not a GPS device, a microchip stays with a pet regardless of how or where it may be relocated. These are just two examples, of what we see multiple times a year.

It is with mixed emotions that we announce that Dr. Dana Schaefer has decided to move back to Virginia. We wish her all the best and know she will be missed by many.

Unlike in the Hall and Oates song, we didn't "pay the devil to replace her," but instead were fortunate to hire Dr. Brittany Devlin who is already garnering followers.

Santa Visit and Buckhaven Open House


Just a reminder that Santa's Coming to Buckhaven Veterinary Clinic in 2 Days!!

Please bring your furry and non-furry family members for a fun photo opportunity on Wednesday, December 6, 2023! Santa and his helper will be taking pictures between 4pm and 8pm, and the clinic will be in an open house setting with adult libations available.

This party and photo opportunity is free to clients and friends of Buckhaven Veterinary Clinic so feel free to invite your friends as well as share this invitation.

Canine Respiratory Disease Complex

We have been receiving a number of questions regarding recent press involving respiratory infections of an unknown cause in dogs. For a number of months we have been seeing respiratory issues in canine patients. These dogs typically present with a cough, and nearly 100% of these dogs have been vaccinated against Bordetella, but that is where the similarities in the patients tend to end. The affected dogs have come from a variety of settings with some having been boarded or gone to daycare, and other having simply only lived at home. We have seen one of two dogs in a household become affected, and we have seen very mild cases as well a very persistent and more severe cases. The current suspicion is that this disease complex may be caused by a bacteria, but typical first choice antibiotics commonly are of minimal to no effect, and some patients require multiple antibiotics.

We are advising clients to watch for a persistent or worsening cough lasting more than 2-3 days, yellow or green nasal discharge, difficulty breathing, lethargy, and/or a lack of appetite. If a cough combined with any of these other issues occurs in your dog we advise making an appointment to have it examined.
