Earlier this year, Brookfield Zoo Chicago conservation leaders Mark Wanner, Interim Vice President of Animal Care & Conservation, and Dr. Sathya Chinnadurai, Senior Vice President of Animal Health, Welfare and Science, traveled to Cameroon and Namibia to support conservation efforts for the critically endangered pangolin. 🌍

As co-founders of the North American Pangolin Consortium (NAPC), we worked in tandem with other institutions to visit the University of Dschang in Cameroon to collaborate on future conservation strategies surrounding pangolins. Then in Namibia, the team’s focus shifted to applied field research in partnership with the Pangolin Conservation Research Foundation (PCRF). Our team joined in on tracking wild pangolins, which helps us better understand these elusive and highly endangered animals.

Together with global conservation partners, we’re continuing to learn, collaborate, and take action for pangolin conservation! Learn more about our work with pangolins at https://bit.ly/4fFljo0

Have you ever seen Tim and Jess showing off their teeth and playfully sparring? 🐻🐻

While their teeth may look intense at first glance, this behavior is completely natural and very important. These playful demonstrations help them practice communication, build strength, and learn boundaries with one another!

Don’t let the name fool you!

Elephant shrews aren’t technically shrews; they’re more closely related to a group of African animals including elephants, sea cows, and aardvarks. They live on the forest floors of east Africa and are named for their long, trunk-like snout!

Every year, thousands of tiny tadpoles begin their journey at Brookfield Zoo Chicago with one important mission: helping save a species. 🐸

Since 2017, Brookfield Zoo Chicago has partnered with the Puerto Rican Crested Toad Conservancy to help raise critically endangered tadpoles before they make their 2,000-mile journey to Puerto Rico for release into protected waterways.

This year alone, our animal care teams raised and counted more than 12,000 tadpoles and since the program began, we’ve helped release nearly 40,000 tadpoles into the wilderness in Puerto Rico. These releases help stabilize wild populations, preserve amphibian biodiversity, and strengthen fragile freshwater ecosystems.

Every tadpole released is another step toward a healthier future for Puerto Rican crested toads and the ecosystems they call home. Learn more about our repopulation and reintroduction programs at https://bit.ly/4tIo23h
