I’d much rather stay ahead of thrush than spend October trying to chase it.

With the wet weather and changing footing that come with fall, No Thrush Powder from Four Oaks Farm Products has earned a permanent place in our hoof-care routine. We pick feet regularly, keep an eye on the frogs, and use No Thrush as part of our maintenance routine when conditions call for it. It’s a simple step that makes staying on top of hoof health much easier. Four Oaks describes No Thrush as a dry powder designed to help manage moisture in the frog and heel area.

There are the things you remember to buy, and then there are the things you desperately need at 7:00 on a Saturday morning because someone has managed to lose a curry comb, scrape a leg, or otherwise create a situation.

Thankfully, Bowman's Feed & Pet carries all of those barn “accidentals” that you never think about until you need them. First aid supplies, grooming tools, shampoo, fly products—you name it. It’s nice to have a feed store nearby that seems to understand exactly what horse people forget.

Well, we’ve had our first of hopefully many beautiful, cool mornings here at A Bit Better Farm. The horses are really enjoying the break from the summer heat and humidity and so are the humans! I think we had a lovely wrap-up to the summer season with Ella Riley making a successful transition to the UK with her Lotty and enjoying her first trip to the AECs during her first week of classes as a college freshman! We are so happy to see Lotty and Ella thriving in the beginning of this HUGE journey!

August also brought a big first for long-time friend and ABBF rider Barbara Miller and her Fizz. It has been a slow, steady journey that led her and this lovely young horse to their first proper show at Full Moon Farm, and both really showed and had a great time! I am so excited for their future together!

Speaking of “firsts,” I am the “first” one to say that the placing doesn’t always represent the effort or ultimately the success we should feel when we finish up a long day of showing, BUT a big blue ribbon does make you smile! Haley Miller and Kristen Parris each had a very well-deserved 1st place showing this past month, so I wanted to extend a special congratulations to them! GREAT job!!!!

Lastly, we have had some of the team wrapping up their qualifications for my favorite event of the year….The Waredaca Classic Three Day Event! If you have not been, I cannot recommend it enough. If you are wondering if you should give it a try, just ask me why I find it so valuable for a horse and rider to do together! This year we have a good group headed that direction, so look for Team ABBF on the 4th weekend in October at the Waredaca Classic!

September is a busy time of year around here. Horses are competing, students are showing, fall clinics are starting, and somehow there are still only 24 hours in a day. Although, if we're being honest, when isn't it a busy time of year?

We’re thankful to have Bowman's Feed & Pet keeping us stocked and making the day-to-day a little easier. Their delivery service means one less thing to worry about when the schedule is already packed.

Fall competition season is not the time to discover that your saddle fit needs attention.

I appreciate how seriously Voltaire Design USA & Canada takes the fit of each horse and rider. Our horses change throughout the season, and having a saddle that keeps us balanced while allowing them to move comfortably is something I never want to take for granted. A quick fit check can make a big difference before heading down the centerline—or out onto cross country.

The transition from summer to fall means plenty of changes around the barn, and I like knowing that our horses’ digestive health is something we can stay ahead of.

We’ve been using Purina Horse Systemiq in our program, along with Outlast, to support healthy digestion and the gut microbiome. Between changing pasture, travel, competition, and different routines, there’s plenty that can challenge a horse’s digestive system. Supporting the gut every day makes a lot of sense to me.

Fall is a good time to check in with your veterinarian and make sure you're not letting routine care get lost in the shuffle of competition season. Vaccinations, dental care, parasite management, and general health checks all deserve a place on the calendar.

I’m especially thankful to have Ridgeview Veterinary Practice on our team. Having a veterinarian who knows our horses, understands our program, and can help us make thoughtful decisions about their care is invaluable—especially when the calendar gets busy.

There's always something the barn runs out of when the season gets busy. Thankfully Bowman's Feed & Pet is only a phone call away. Whether it's grain, supplements, or the little things we somehow forgot to order, their team always helps keep us on track.

Running a lesson program, coaching at competitions, riding multiple horses, answering client messages...there are never enough hours in the day.

That's why having Mythic Landing Enterprises, LLC behind the scenes has been such a huge asset. Instead of worrying about websites, sponsor deadlines, content, and the endless administrative tasks that come with running a business, I get to focus on the reason I started this in the first place: teaching, riding, and taking care of horses.

Sometimes the best investment you can make in your business is buying yourself more time.

It’s hard to believe that the summer is coming to an end already!

This summer has been a bit of a whirlwind for me personally and around the farm at ABBF. We have had the fortune of welcoming several new farm family members, and I can’t tell you how excited I am to see each of them and their horses progress! Team ABBF has had some really great outings at some of our favorite events this summer. I think it’s safe to say that whether it’s been a top placing or an experience that offered a few really valuable lessons, everyone has had a lot of fun in the show ring this summer so far!

Of course, not all of our biggest wins actually happen in the show ring, and so I have particularly enjoyed spending time this summer helping a number of students get a feel for the process of bringing along a young horse or even redeveloping and perfecting some parts of the performance of their older partners. These at-home wins will make it so they can ultimately produce the results they are looking for in the fall!

With that said, we are looking ahead to the fall and some big goals! First up will be Ella Riley as she moves into her new home away from home at the University of Kentucky AND tries her hand at the AECs all in the same week! GOOD LUCK, Ella!!!
