43 cats. In ONE day. 🐱

Yesterday alone, 43 cats came into our care. That’s 43 new cats who needed somewhere safe to go - and it means we urgently need to make space for the cats already here and ready for homes.

So, from now through October 31, ALL CAT ADOPTION FEES ARE WAIVED! 🐱❤️

If you’ve been thinking about adding a cat to your family, now is a REALLY good time to come meet them. Every cat who heads home opens up valuable space for another animal who needs us.

A few things to know:

🐾 Adoptions are same-day - we do not place holds.

🐾 All adopters must have an approved adoption application. Don’t have one yet? That’s okay! You can complete one when you arrive.

🐾 Please bring a secure cat carrier from home, or cardboard carriers are available for $10.

🐾 Adoption fees are waived for cats October 22–31, 2026.

We have cats of all ages, personalities, shapes, sizes, and levels of cattitude waiting to meet you. ❤️

43 cats came through our doors yesterday. Help us make room by giving one of the cats already waiting a door of their own to walk through. 🏡🐾

🐾 SILLY PHOTO SUNDAY! 😂📸

Bella would like everyone to know that she is VERY photogenic.

We would like everyone to know that this is apparently her definition of photogenic. 😂

That face. Those little teeth. The mid-run action shot. Absolutely no notes. 10/10, Bella.

Now it’s your pets’ turn! 👇

📸 Drop the silliest photo you have of your pet in the comments! Dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs—we want to see all the weird faces, questionable sleeping positions, mid-zoomie disasters, and perfectly timed photos.

Let’s fill the comments with some much-needed silliness. ❤️🐾

And everybody give Bella some appreciation for kicking us off in style. 😂

💕 Little Miss Muffet is looking for her happily ever after! 🐱

Meet Miss Muffet, a beautiful 5-year-old Domestic Medium Hair with a little extra specialness! 💕

Miss Muffet is blind, but that doesn't mean she can't live a wonderful, love-filled life! She just needs a family willing to help her navigate the world at her own pace.

Along with her blindness, Miss Muffet has a few medical concerns, including a healing wound, dental issues, miliary dermatitis (a skin condition), a corneal scar, and synechia (an eye condition). We know that sounds like a lot, but these conditions don't define who she is or how much love she deserves!

Miss Muffet is looking for someone who will see beyond her medical needs and give her the patience, understanding, and security she deserves. A consistent, comfortable home can make all the difference for a blind kitty. 🏡

❤️ Special needs don't mean less love. Sometimes, they just mean finding an extra-special person.

Could you be Miss Muffet's happily ever after? Come meet her at the Humane Society of Elkhart County! 🐾

Did you know you can help an animal find a new home BEFORE they ever enter the shelter? ❤️🐾

Pets need to be rehomed for all kinds of reasons. Sometimes families face unexpected financial hardships, changes in housing, health challenges, or other circumstances that make it difficult to continue caring for a beloved pet.

Whatever the reason, having to find a new home for an animal can be an incredibly difficult decision.

That's why we have a special section on our website dedicated to pets in our community who need new homes!

These dogs and cats are still living with their current families while they wait for someone new to love them. By adopting one of these animals, you can help them transition directly from one home to another, without ever having to spend time in a shelter.

And that's a wonderful thing for everyone involved. ❤️

Interested in meeting one of these pets? Visit our website, click "Adopt," and select "Pets Needing Rehomed" to see who's waiting!

If someone catches your eye, give us a call at 574-475-4732. We'll be happy to help you learn more and connect you with the next steps.

Sometimes, helping an animal doesn't mean adopting from a shelter. Sometimes, it means helping them never have to enter one in the first place. 🐾

We may not know where Lisbon’s story began, but we’d really love to help her find where she belongs next. ❤️

Lisbon came to HSEC as a stray, so her past is a bit of a mystery. We don’t know what her life looked like before she arrived here or who she shared it with.

What we DO know is the dog she’s showing us she is today.

Lisbon is happy, curious, playful, and always ready for some attention. Our volunteers say she loves getting lots of pets and has plenty of energy for playtime. She can pull a little on leash when she’s excited, but she’s also a snuggler once it’s time to settle in.

And apparently, this girl LOVES water. 💦 Whether that means she’s dreaming of a backyard kiddie pool, trips to the lake, or simply making a spectacular mess with the garden hose remains to be seen. 😂

We might never know Lisbon’s whole story before she came to us.
But her future? That’s still waiting to be written.

Come meet Lisbon and see if the next chapter might be with you. ❤️🐾

Precious has already known what it feels like to be loved. Now, he needs someone to love him through his next chapter. ❤️

This handsome 7-year-old came to HSEC after his owner sadly passed away. At about 18 pounds, Precious is a whole lot of cat—and according to our staff and volunteers, a whole lot of love, too.

He’s quickly shown us just how sweet he is. Precious loves being held, curling up with people, making biscuits, and purring his heart out. One volunteer simply described him as the “sweetest cat.” ❤️

But don’t let his cuddly side fool you—Precious still has plenty of playfulness in him! He’s curious, loves attention, and apparently believes shoes make perfectly acceptable scratching posts. 😂

And when it comes to pets? Head, chin, back, base of the tail... pretty much everywhere. Precious isn’t picky.

He didn’t expect to be starting over at 7 years old. We’d really love for his stay with us to be just a short stop on the way to another home where he can feel safe, comfortable, and very loved again.

Come meet Precious. There’s an 18-pound biscuit-making, lap-loving, purring machine waiting for you. ❤️🐾

Our pet food pantry shelves are looking pretty bare, and we could really use your help filling them back up! ❤️🐾

Through our pet food assistance program, we’re able to provide dog and cat food to local pet owners who need a little extra help. Sometimes, a bag of food can make a real difference for a family trying to keep their pet happy, healthy, and at home where they belong.

Right now, we are especially in need of:
🐶 Dry adult dog food
🐱 Dry adult cat food

Any brand and any size bag is helpful! We just ask that all donations be unopened and unexpired.

Donations can be dropped off at HSEC anytime we’re open, or food can be purchased through the donation link included in the graphic.

Thank you for helping us care for animals not only inside our shelter, but throughout our community, too. ❤️
