is a private, not for profit organization that has sole discretion of what may or may not be posted on its social media. Content may be scrutinized for appropriateness and truthfulness as well as relevance to the Humane Society’s purpose or marketing objectives of promoting the organization’s adoptable animals, activities of the shelter and educational segments HSEC deems of importance. Hundreds o

f groups and individuals may request to cross post information. However, the Humane Society cannot accommodate all such requests. Lost and Found Animals - Relevant to finders of lost animals, Elkhart County’s ordinance requires that all lost and found animals are to be reported to the Humane Society by the finder and they are to speak to the Humane Society staff in order to provide necessary information. A social media post or message to HSEC by itself is not acceptable. All are requested to contact the shelter in order to gather more specific and pertinent information. They may also be directed to other relevant social media sites that offer pet lost and found report functions as their specific media purpose. Reporting Suspected Abuse and Neglect
Messages or social media posts alone may not be used to pursue reports of abuse or neglect. Contact the Humane Society or local law enforcement to ensure necessary investigation. Potential Banning of Individuals/Groups Posting or Messaging - Individuals who may display profanity, misinformation, malicious gossip, hearsay, fail to repeatedly follow directions or information provided to them in response to their previous posts or messages or who consistently post information that does not fall into the realm of the Humane Society’s designated objectives may be banned from posting any information on HSEC social media. Confidentiality - Information regarding animals that may be at the shelter will not be released due to the confidentiality of the owner, animal situation or possible ongoing investigations. If your idea of a perfect Saturday includes fresh air, a long walk, and a game of fetch that never seems to end, we'd like to introduce you to Topps. 🎾🐾

Topps is a 1-year-old terrier mix with a big personality and even bigger energy. He loves to play, loves treats, and absolutely loves chasing a ball. When he's not busy playing fetch, you'll find him soaking up pets from his favorite people and showing off his happy, playful side.

Our volunteers describe him as sweet, affectionate, energetic, and eager to learn. He's been working on his leash manners and has made great progress. Topps has also participated in a dog play group and enjoyed running and playing chase with another dog.

At 47 pounds, he's the perfect adventure buddy for someone looking for an active companion. Plus, his adoption fee is completely waived!

Stop by HSEC on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and meet Topps. He just might be the teammate you've been looking for.

Join us on Sunday, June 14, from 11am-2pm at the Elkhart Moose Lodge for our fourth Community Boost event, where we'll be providing free vaccinations and microchips for owned pets while supplies last.

We're running low on pate-style wet cat food, and it's one of our most-needed items right now.

Many of the cats in our care, especially kittens, seniors, and those recovering from illness, do best with pate food. It's easy to eat, easy to mix with medications, and helps keep them hydrated.

☀️🐾 Hot Weather Alert for Pets! 🐾☀️

The next couple of days are expected to bring some summer heat, and it's important to remember that our pets feel it too.

When temperatures climb:
💧 Always provide access to fresh, clean water
🌳 Make sure pets have plenty of shade if they're outdoors
🏠 Bring pets inside whenever possible during the hottest parts of the day
🐕 Limit walks and outdoor activity to the early morning or evening hours
🐾 Check pavement before walks — if it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for their paws
🚗 Never leave a pet unattended in a vehicle, even for a few minutes

Heat-related illnesses can happen quickly and can become life-threatening. Keep a close eye on your pets for signs of overheating, including excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, or difficulty walking.

A little extra caution can go a long way in keeping our furry family members safe and comfortable during this hot weather. Stay cool, Elkhart County! ❤️🐾☀️

Some cats are impossible to ignore.

Others, like Tasha, quietly wait and hope their person will come along. 💜

This beautiful 3-year-old dilute tortoiseshell has been with us since April, and we're not quite sure why. She's already spayed, weighs a petite 8.9 pounds, and is ready to head home with her new family today.

Hi, I'm Crypto! I'm a 3-year-old terrier mix with a heart that's way bigger than any obstacle life has thrown my way.

Sure, I've only got three legs—but don't tell me that I'm supposed to slow down. I still love to play, explore, and soak up all the attention I can get. In fact, I've gotten so good at this whole tripod thing that most people forget I'm missing a leg at all!
