Amazing breakthrough!

Meet the offspring of opportunity! 🪸🧬
In a breakthrough that could revolutionize efforts to restore local coral reefs, scientists at NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic & Meteorological Laboratory and Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science have successfully overseen the first-ever crossbreeding between grooved brain corals (Diploria labyrinthiformis) collected from a highly urbanized site in PortMiami and a nearby reef enduring extreme shifts in temperature, salinity, and water quality along busy seawalls and shipping lanes.
Despite it all, they survive and thrive. Scientists are hoping that the resilience of these urban corals is retained in the urban-reef crosses and that they could bolster the resilience of local reefs. At one year old, the corals can be outplanted onto the reef, but in the meantime, the Urban Coral Team is beginning experiments to see how the reef-urban juveniles respond when exposed to thermal stress or acidic conditions.
