When practicing with your dog, keep it short and successful. A mistake that you don't want to make is pushing your dog to the point of failure over and over. An example would be trying to get your dog to sit for 60 seconds. If you keep getting to 50 seconds and your dog gets up or lies down, you need to take a step back and do something your dog can succeed with. If 50 seconds is where the dog keeps failing at, I would shoot for 40 seconds. When the dog is successful with 40 seconds, release him and reward. Do a couple repetitions of having successful 40 second repetitions and then try to increase the amount of time you are asking for
