Your leash isn’t the problem. The 30 seconds before you walk out the door are.

Most “leash problems” start in the house. The puppy is already amped, pacing, pawing, whining, and then we clip the leash on and try to fix it outside.

Here’s a simple pre-walk reset you can start today:

Clip the leash on after calm, not before it. Ask for a sit or stand near the door. No nagging, no “sit-sit-sit.” Say it once, then calmly help them into position if needed. Wait for three quiet breaths. No whining, no pawing, no lunging at the door. If they pop up, reset them and start the three breaths over. Door opens only for calm brains.

If your puppy rushes or hits the end of the leash, calmly close the door, reset, and try again. The “reward” isn’t a treat here, it’s access to the world.

Don’t hope your leash fixes chaos. Use structure before the walk so your pup steps out the door already calmer and more connected to you.

Rocky and Miso arrived Monday from Hoosier Canines for their Board and Train programs, Rocky for 3 weeks and Miso for 4.

The first few days are all about helping them settle in and learn how to follow our lead. We start with simple structure, calm movement, and steady routines so they begin building trust, focus, and connection.

Rocky and Miso arrived Monday for their Board and Train programs. Rocky is here for 3 weeks, and Miso is here for 4.

We’re starting with the basics and building the foundation first, trust, structure, and learning to stay with us. Simple start, big progress ahead.

Meet Jet. 🐾 This young pup is full of opinions and he has no problem expressing them. The cutest ones always seem to be a little extra.

We first met Jet and his family during an in-home consultation, and now he is here with us for a two-week board and train. He has a big personality, a busy little brain, and that smile? Come on…

Over the next two weeks, we’ll be working on the important stuff: potty routine, leash manners, calm settling, door manners, and learning how to make better choices around people and daily distractions.

Jet has some work to do, but that’s exactly why we’re here. It starts with structure, communication, and follow-through. Repeat, repeat and… repeatedly repeat until it’s repetitive enough to repeat again.

But for today… we just wanted to brighten your day with this smile. 😍

Happy Mother’s Day to the fur baby mamas!

The ones elbow-deep in p**p bags, covered in dog hair like it’s the latest fashion, holding a coffee in one hand and a leash tangled around their soul in the other.

We see you. We salute you. We know your camera roll is 94% dog.

Happy Mother’s Day from Training That Lasts. 🐾

Nothing better than seeing dogs and owners start to understand each other a little more clearly.

Tripp, Ace, and Ernie are great examples of what happens when training is built around communication, patience, structure, and a relationship that actually makes sense to the dog.

We’re grateful for every family who trusts us with their dogs, their questions, and those “please help, this is getting crazy” moments. That’s exactly why we do this.

Thank you to Cassie and Dana for the kind words and for letting us be part of your dogs’ progress.

Had a great experience with Training That Lasts? We’d love to hear from you.

Build A Lifestyle Your Dog Understands. Good training is not just teaching “sit,” “stay,” or “come.” It is the daily structure behind the commands.

Dogs do best when life makes sense. Clear boundaries, calm direction, consistent rules, and positive follow-through help your dog understand what is expected at home, around distractions, and out in the real world.

At Training That Lasts, we focus on building habits that reduce stress, prevent unwanted behaviors, and help your dog become calmer, more confident, and easier to live with on the "bad days". Training doesn't just have to be in sessions when you're calling it training. It is how you communicate with them each and every day.

Learn more about dog training in general and see all of our articles here. We are adding more and more content every week so we can continue to educate.
