🚫✋ I disagree… and I’m going to be open about it.

A cat owner is considering putting their cat outside because of house-soiling issues. And to make matters worse, others are encouraging it, saying things like, “Put them outside. If they have claws, they’ll be fine. If the cat gets hurt outside, that’s the cat’s fault, not yours.”

They asked my take on it. And so…👇
I disagree. Strongly.

There are other options besides putting a cat outside. MANY options. Even if you’ve tried several things, there may still be answers you haven’t explored yet. Please don’t give up on them.

I disagree that a cat is automatically safe outside simply because they have claws. Claws are not a force field. They won’t protect a cat from cars, diseases, parasites, extreme weather, predators, or cruel people. Having claws doesn’t make a cat invincible.

And I wholeheartedly disagree with the idea that if a cat gets hurt or killed outside, it’s the cat’s fault.

NO. Our cats depend on us. That’s our responsibility.

When we bring an animal into our lives, we take on the responsibility of caring for them through the good, the bad, and the frustrating moments. From food and enrichment to playtime, litter box issues, and veterinary care, we are their guides and their advocates.

House-soiling can be frustrating. I understand that. But it can also be a sign of an underlying medical issue, stress, or something about their litter box environment that needs to change. There are avenues to explore. There is help available.

And to say, often times it doesn’t help the behavior! It can make it worse.

We can’t just decide one day that we’re done and tell them to “figure it out.”

They don’t understand why the home they’ve always known is suddenly no longer safe. They don’t understand why the people they trust have put them out into a world they may not be equipped to survive.

Our cats are not disposable. They are not problems to be thrown away when things get difficult. They are living, feeling beings who depend on us to do right by them.

They deserve patience. They deserve compassion. They deserve a chance.

And they deserve better than being tossed outside because we ran out of patience.

Please, if you’re struggling with a cat who is house-soiling, seek help before making a decision that could put their life at risk. ❤️🐾

We owe them better. They trust us with their lives. 😩💔

If you don’t know, weight can and often does play a major role in your cats litter box behaviors. If your cat struggles to use the litter box, they might just find elsewhere to go.
