$700. That’s what stands between us and today’s hay. Tomorrow, I’ll have to figure it out all over again.

This morning, our founder wrote about the weight of being a rescue founder. And here we are, just hours later, living exactly what she wrote about.

We need a minimum of four big bales today at $175 each, assuming Big R still has them in stock.

But let’s not stop at four! Every $175–$185 buys another bale. Every additional bale means one less worry tomorrow.

Until larger grants and sustainable funding come through, this is the reality of keeping 141 animals fed and cared for.

They don’t know we’re waiting on funding. They just trust that we’ll show up.

Can you help us turn four bales into eight? Or even ten?

Every $5, $25, or $175 makes a difference. And every share helps us reach someone new.

Journey with Equus | Saving the Forgotten, Healing the Hurting

10/05/2026

WE WILL NEED 4 TODAY & 4 TOMORROW
WE NEED TO FILL A TRUCK WITH HAY. 84 BALES. $15,000.

Okay everyone, we need you. We simply cannot keep piecing hay together a few bales at a time every single day. We are putting out 3–4 of these big bales a day, they are costing us $175 each right now, and our hay prices have nearly doubled this year. So we are putting together a fundraiser to buy 84 bales at once. That’s it. Grass hay. Not some huge project, not something fancy. Just what it costs right now to feed this herd.

And I’m going to say something because this is the part of rescue that people don’t always want to talk about. We have had plenty of people tell us that if we can’t afford the increase in hay, then shut the doors, place the horses we can and euthanize the rest. We’ve been told we shouldn’t have to fundraise to feed them. And then, even better, there are the people who call in a welfare check because apparently asking our community for help must mean the horses aren’t being cared for.

You bet. Come see them.

Come see the fat, happy horses standing at the feeders. Come see the seniors who have a safe place to grow old. Come see the ones who arrived thin or broken down who are gaining weight and healing. And yes, when we bring in a horse who needs rehabilitation, they may look like a horse who needs rehabilitation because THAT IS WHY THEY ARE HERE. They are under veterinary care, they are being fed, they are being cared for, and we will keep doing everything we can to give them the life they deserve.

This is rescue, folks. It is messy. It is expensive. It is heartbreaking sometimes and absolutely incredible other times, and it is definitely not for the faint of heart. But after more than 11 years of doing this, I cannot wrap my head around the idea that the answer is to throw them away because things got hard. So many of these horses are here because somebody already gave up on them once. We made them a promise that they would not be disposable again.

What we need now is community.

If you can sponsor an entire bale for $175, AMAZING. If you can sponsor half of one, amazing. If you have $25 or $10 or $5, it all gets us closer to filling that truck. And if you can’t donate, SHARE THIS. Tell a friend. Send it to somebody you know who loves horses. Send it to a business looking for a meaningful charitable giving opportunity.

And PLEASE, if you know an individual donor, a company, a foundation, a family trust or anyone else who might be interested in making a significant impact, introduce us. We would love nothing more than to find someone who says, “I’ve got your hay for the next year.” Hay is our single biggest expense, and having that funded would completely change what we are able to do here instead of constantly worrying about how we are going to pay for the next load.

So right now, the ask is simple: 84 bales. Approximately $15,000. One truckload of hay.

We don’t need one person to do it all. We need a whole bunch of people to decide that these lives are worth showing up for.

And then there is the bigger picture.

If you are reading this thinking, here has to be a way to stop doing emergency hay fundraisers over and over again, there is.

That is our $5 Promise.

We are looking for 5,000 people willing to commit just $5 a month. When we get there, we create the sustainability that allows us to stop asking for hay money every day, every week, every month and start knowing that this herd’s most basic need is covered.

TO JOIN THE $5 PROMISE:
https://donorbox.org/5promise

One helps us fill the truck **today**. The other helps us build a future where we aren’t back here asking you to fill another one tomorrow.

We made a promise to this herd. We intend to keep it.

And I believe with our community standing beside us, we can. ❤️

Journey with Equus / Liberty’s Legacy Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

AND… LET’S MAKE THIS A LITTLE MORE FUN. ❤️

Every donation made toward our hay fundraiser gets ONE entry into a drawing for a very special stay at Colorado Glamping at Raison d’Être Ranch — regardless of the amount you give.

$5? One entry.
$25? One entry.
Sponsor an entire $175 bale? One entry.

Because this isn’t about who can give the most. It’s about how many people we can get to come together and help us fill this truck.

And let’s just say… Colorado Glamping has some VERY exciting news coming soon. 👀

We aren’t spilling it quite yet, but you’re definitely going to want to stay tuned.

**MEET SHASTA 🌼**

If you’ve been following along, you’ve probably seen this nose before. 😂 Shasta is one of our six Wandering Daisies, the little family of jennies who recently came to Journey with Equus together.

Shasta is still pretty unsure about this whole human thing. I can’t just walk up and love all over her yet. Right now, trust happens one tiny moment at a time…a nose reaching toward me, staying instead of leaving, deciding maybe I’m not so scary after all.

And while Shasta and the rest of the Daisies are learning that they are safe here, there is one thing they definitely understand already:

**HAY. 😂**

So Shasta has volunteered herself as today’s official Hay Fundraiser Spokesdonkey.

Our big grass-hay bales weigh approximately 850 pounds EACH and cost us $175 a bale right now. With this herd, we put out 3–4 of those big bales every single day.

There is a limited supply of this hay the faster we can put together a substantial fund the more we can purchase while the supplier has it.

We’re working toward 84 bales—one truckload and approximately one month of hay.

Want to sponsor Shasta’s bale today? $175 buys the whole thing. Or throw $5, $10, $25 or $50 toward it and we’ll build that bale together.

And because Shasta thinks you deserve something for keeping her belly full, **every donation to our hay fundraiser gets ONE entry into our drawing for a special stay at Colorado Glamping at Raison d’Être Ranch, regardless of the amount.**

And yes…if you win, you just might get to meet this nose in person. 😂❤️
