In honor of World Rabies Day we wanted to take a moment to spread awareness and educate the general public about alarming new statistics. There has been a substantial increase in positive rabies cases, an estimated 17% increase across the country compared to last year. There is concern cases will continue to rise due to increased hesitancy around vaccines.

The CDC Reports 64 animals (wild and domestic) have tested positive for rabies across the state of Colorado so far in 2026.
We are finding a lack of understanding regarding how dangerous and brutal rabies is. It is a fatal disease (for animals and humans), that has no cure or testing for living animals.

(Trigger warning) The only way to test for rabies is via the brain tissue, which cannot be done on a live animal; a suspected case must be euthanized and decapitated to test. Rabies is not only fatal but incredibly painful. Symptoms include but are not limited to fever, sensitivity to light/sound, pica, seizures, muscle weakness/paralysis, facial distortion, and a paralyzed larynx.

The good news is that the Rabies vaccines is very effective! Vaccinated dogs and cats are 90 times less likely to contract the disease than unvaccinated animals! The vaccine is very safe with rare cases of allergic reactions. The vaccine has even been around for 144 years.
Here at Wildflower we have yet to have an anaphylactic reaction to the rabies vaccines in 5 years! Minor side effects such as decreased energy and soreness near the injection site can be common, but long-term effects are rare.
