Growing Around Grief was a concept introduced by counselor Lois Tonkin in 1996. It offers a comforting way to understand how we live with loss.

We often imagine that grief will slowly become smaller as time passes. But sometimes, the grief itself doesn't shrink. Instead, our lives gradually grow around it. We learn, heal, love, laugh, and create new memories while still carrying the love and loss of the one we miss.

Grief doesn't have to disappear for life to be meaningful again. We don't move on from those we love. Rather, we learn to carry their absence alongside everything new that life brings.

Memorial Monday

💜 Winston 💜

Our family is forever grateful to Dr. Cate, whose kindness has guided us through this heartbreaking time with heartfelt care, compassion, and comfort. Words cannot express how thankful and grateful we truly are. The following is dedicated to our little Winston who came to us with a lot of spirit and s***k, who won our hearts and had to leave us too soon.

Winston, you brightened our days with runs in the rain, games of hide and seek, chase, and delightful zoomies. You were our stellar guard dog, barking at thunderstorms, ambulance sirens, cupboard doors that were open, chipmunks on the deck and things that went bump in the night. You loved sugar snap peas, green beans, corn, and Mandarin oranges. You welcomed everyone with tail wags and doggie kisses. You had a special place in your heart for the children. They loved you. Cherished are the wonderful times we had together, but most of all, it is your sweet and soft cuddles that are so very much missed.

We are remembering you now and always, when you were happy and healthy, ready for the adventures of a new day and lots of love. We miss you, little boy.

While no checklist can make the decision easy, many families find it helpful during an incredibly emotional time.
