Staff pet spotlight: meet Emmett.
Emmett is a 5 year old Rough Collie. He was supposed to be a normal-sized Rough Collie. He had other plans.
At 95 pounds, Emmett is technically a gentle giant, emphasis on gentle. He is the kind of dog who takes his responsibilities seriously, and his most important job is backyard safety supervisor.
Swinging too high? He'll let you know.
Riding too fast? He's already on it.
AC vent on the floor? That's his. Don't ask.
Emmett belongs to our practice manager, Dani and lives in a house of mostly girls, which means he is outnumbered, adored, and occasionally dressed up. He spends his days keeping everyone in line, staying close to his people, and being approximately twice the dog anyone expected him to be.
We wouldn't have it any other way.

June grass deep dive: your post-adventure paw check guide.
If you caught our earlier post about june grass awns, you know why they're worth taking seriously. Now let's talk about what to actually DO about it.

Every time your dog comes in from a walk, hike, or backyard adventure this time of year, do a quick check of these spots:
🐾 Paws and toes — spread the toes apart and look between each one. Awns love to nestle in here and start burrowing fast.
👂 Ears — especially in floppy-eared dogs. Head shaking, scratching, or tilting is your signal that something got in.
👁️ Eyes — squinting, discharge, or pawing at the face means get them seen. An awn near the eye moves fast.
🐕 Armpits and groin — long-haired dogs especially. These are warm, hidden spots awns migrate toward.
Anywhere they won't stop licking — trust your pet on this one. If they keep going back to a spot, something is probably there.

Caught early: usually a quick removal and you're done.
Left alone: can migrate under the skin, into the ear canal, or cause serious infection that needs veterinary care.

Type A: Sees the hose. Loses their entire mind. Tries to bite the water. Gets everyone soaked. Zero regrets.
Type B: You aimed the hose in their general direction ONE time three summers ago and they have never forgotten or forgiven you.

💧 Summer water safety: what every pet owner should know before hitting the lake.
Utah summers are beautiful and if your pet is joining you at the reservoir, river, or pool this season, a little prep goes a long way.

A few things to keep in mind:
Not all dogs are natural swimmers — brachycephalic breeds (Bulldogs, Pugs, Frenchies) struggle in water even if they want to join in. A life jacket isn't just for boats.
Blue-green algae is a real danger — it can bloom in warm, slow-moving water and is toxic to pets even in small amounts. If the water looks greenish or murky, keep your pet out.
Rinse after every swim — lakes and rivers carry bacteria, parasites, and debris that can irritate skin and ears. A quick rinse goes a long way.
Watch for swimmer's ear — dogs who love water are prone to ear infections. If you notice head shaking or scratching after a swim, give us a call.
Keep fresh water available — pets drinking from lakes or pools can ingest bacteria, chemicals, and parasites. Make it easy for them to choose the clean option.

It looks like a w**d. It acts like a needle. And it's everywhere right now!

June grass season is here, and if you have a dog who spends any time outside, this one's worth a read!

Awns are the sharp, seed-like tips of june grass that dry out and detach every summer. The problem is how they're designed: barbed to move forward and nearly impossible to back out. Once they're in your pet's fur or skin, they keep going.
Common hiding spots: between the toes, inside the ear canal, around the eyes, in the armpit or groin.
Common signs something's wrong: head shaking, pawing at the face, limping, or a spot that won't stop licking.

A quick paw-and-ear check after every walk is your best defense. And if something looks off, swollen, red, or your pet won't leave it alone, call us at 435-734-9831

Memorial Weekend Survival Guide — Pet Edition

Your dog WILL try to eat something off the grill this weekend. It's basically tradition at this point.
Before the festivities kick off, here's a quick reminder of what to keep out of paw's reach:
🚫 Corn cobs — a surprisingly common blockage culprit
🚫 Grapes & raisins — toxic even in small amounts
🚫 Onions & garlic — yes, even in the potato salad
🚫 Xylitol — found in some sugar-free condiments and gum
🚫 Alcohol — no sharing, even "just a little"

And if the fireworks start early this year — keep pets indoors, close the blinds, and turn on some background noise. More pets go missing around holidays than any other time of year. 💙
